Finally got stuff to reload for my M96s.

What COL are you guys loading?

I am loading a 140gr AMAX to 3.200"

Anybody familiar with the AMAX? I've been trying to figure out what kind of bullet it is. I don't see where it's listed as a hunting bullet anywhere. I am guessing it is not a varmint bullet as Hornady has the VMAX. Is it in the same genre as the match king?

Based on my measurements 3.200" is off of the rifling. Actually it's about as long as I can load it and still have it fit in the mag.

I've got a pound of RL22. What's a good starting load? The max load listed is 48.0 gr. I am planning on starting at 44.0gr.

I use the listed COL in the loading manuals for that specific bullet I am loading.

I can't seat to lands in my M96 because there is too much freebore. The bullet is nowhere near the neck of the case if seated to the lands in my specific rifle. But, accuracy is still good.

I load Sierra 140 grain Match Kings, at about 3.165", shooting out of a Swedish Mauser rifle, made in in 1900. This shoots well for me; 3.200' may do well for you. I have no experience with the Hornady AMAX.

I also use Reloder 22, and when I started working up my load, I started at 44 grains. I ended with 45.2 grains.

My 6.5x55 Tactical Rifle loads are set to a COAL that puts the bullet (142SMK) at 0.010" off the lands.

That's all you can do, unless you want to single load -- then you can load them so the bullets are just off the lands.

You've got the right powder, and your plan should work fine. I'm using 48.0gr of RL22 for 2925fps, but I've got a stronger action and a good barrel.
