View Full Version : 870 w/holes in the receiver?

I found a good deal on an older 870. The dealer has two left -- both in need of refinishing but in perfect working order.

Here's the thing -- the shottie in better shape has its receiver drilled as if for a scope. Should I get the one in better shape with the holes? Do they have any negative impact on its longevity or function?

Or should I pass on the holey shotgun and go for the unholed 870?

Thanks for your advice.

With no other information, I'd say the holes don't compromise the gun.

Appearance-wise is another story.

Should you decide to buy it, Brownell's sell special "plug" screws with low, domed heads that will close up the holes and improve the appearance considerable.

The domed heads act as positive stops to prevent the screws from going past flush.

However, in my case, I'd just keep looking. Used 870 in good shape are easy to find.

I'm in agreement with D. Keep on looking unless the price is REALLY good...

Deduct $10 per hole, have the holes filled in by welding, file/sand them flush, and then have the shotgun refinished.
Or just call CDNN, or check Gunbroker. There are always HUNDREDS of 870's on Gunbroker.
