Anybody have any recommendations on a scope for my new 25/06? I'd be using it for hunting, probably 300 - 350 yards tops. I'm kind of leaning towards either another Nikon or Burris in 40 mm or maybe 50mm if I can find a good deal on one, but just don't know what to think about the actual power.

Lots of people will disagree with me, but I think if a big game animal is too far away to see clearly with a 3x9 scope at 9 power, you should not be shooting at it. With a smaller scope your rifle will balance better, and you will not be tempted to take shots that are too long, or in poor light. When I gave my son a big game rifle, it had a fixed 3x scope on it, and I told him that if he shot at an animal more than 200 yards away I'd take it back.

This is definitely not the prevailing attitude anymore, what with people ambushing game from fixed stands and a steady rest, so you'll probably want to ignore my advice. For myself, I had to give up hunting, since I like to sit or sneak along on the ground, and here in the East I'm definitely afraid I'll get shot.

I was looking at the same two companies for scopes for my CZ 550, after looking at both of them, along with leupold I really came away with the feeling you got a lot more scope with the Burris, I am speaking of the VXII, Sig Select, and Monarch lines of scopes though.

If it were me I would pick up a Burris 4-16x44 Sig Select. It has a very broaud range of power, and honestly I too feel pretty "out glassed" if I were taking a shot on something at 300+ yards with just a 9 power scope.

I'm looking at a new Burris Fullfield II 3-9X50 for $275 shipped to me. How good of a deal does that sound? Same price as on riflescopes.com, but including shipping. Looks like $25 to $50 cheaper than anywhere else as far as I can see.

If you feel thats enough power for shooting at that distance and are comfortable with it, I'd say it's a pretty good deal. I think the FFII line is pretty darn good for the money.

My dad has a Burris 4-16x on his Ruger M77V in 25-06... it's a BAD idea to turn that up to full power unless you have a spotter and are shooting at 300 yards or so (antelope or varmints). Recoil takes you totally off target at 16x and it's hard to shoot with both eyes open.

For most hunting a 3-9x is fine.

Burris makes great scopes.

straight 10X is my preference, but most people are very satisfied with a 3X9

I'm not a Burris fan, but I know a few hunters who are. And I think $275 for a 3X9 FFII sounds pretty good. I've found a top setting of 9X is plenty for the hunting I do. In fact, I've probably killed more game with my scopes set on 3X.

I have a Nikon 4-12 X 40 I'm lookin to get rid of. I was going to put it on ebay, but we can talk if you'd like.

I like this power range on the 25-06 because if you do decide to do any kind varmint hunting the 12x will come in handy. If you're only going big game the 3-9 ish range is a good all arounder.

I use a 6.5x20 AO Vari-x III on my 25-06. The 20 power is good for peering at targets and figuring out where the bullet hit, but I rarely use it otherwise. About 16x is a good max for pupil size and brightness for me.

I've got a 3-9X40 Nikon Monarch on my .25-06 Tikka M595 Whitetail hunter SS/Syn atelope/deer gun.

Last year in Wyoming I got my antelope at a range finder confirmed 410 yards.

9 power was plenty.
