Went to a shop today and......

I was running some errands today, one of which was renewing my carry license (which was a pleasant experience and took all of $23 and 20 minutes for 5 more years) and I decided to visit an area gun shop that I patronize only on an occassional basis. Usually I do my archery business there because it's one of the better stocked shops in the area for that and because they are so over priced in the firearms arena it is ridiculous......today I decided to browse through their plentiful stock of long guns that are out in the open for all to fondle. I do appreciate the fact that they allow handling.

The very first rack I approached had a nice looking SAR-1 AK style rifle with a tan folding stock. The stock was butt ugly but did make the rifle catch my eye. I picked it up, checked it out, looked at the attached tag and damn near fell over.............first of all it was priced at an expected ridiculous price, being $399.00 but what almost made me exclaim my disbelief aloud was that it was being sold as a Romanian SKS! It was listed as a Romarms
7.62x39 SKS

I am still shaking my head as I write this post because this is at a shop where it is family run and the owner has been in business for at least 30 years, even area police officers do business with him. I was going to politely point this out, but usually the husband and wife are so damn gruff that I didn't bother. They also had a store full of guys and I didn't want to embarrass anyone.

Maybe I am making too much of it in my own warped opinion, but I did wonder if anyone else has picked up on that since that rifle made it on the rack. Probably a minor mix up in writing the tag, but it looks like ignorance and shouldn't happen in a gun store.

I wonder if somebody swapped tags, thinking to come back later and snap it up. I heard of that being tried at a shop I used to frequent in Poway, CA.

The thought never crossed my mind, but now that you bring it up I suppose it's possible. I wouldn't think anyone in their right mind would want to pay $399 for an SKS though............that's just plain nuts. At other local shops if someone were to make a few phone calls and take 10 minutes of time they would quickly figure out that they could buy either rifle for less than that.

You'd be surprised what the uninformed will pay.

I saw a SAR-1 in a local shop priced at $2200. The wood was nice (actuall very nice) but other than that there was nothing terribly special about it. I actually laughed out loud when I saw it.

Guess what - it sold about two weeks after I saw it. Highpoints that can be picked up at gun shows new for $99 to $139 this same gunshop sells for well over $300 - [shakes head] and they get it.

Lots of uninformed people out there that don't know any better and who will pay what ever the sticker price happens to be.

Being a hard core capitalist I don't hold it against the gun shop at all - I just will not buy anything there unless I special order it. For some reason the pricing for stuff they don't stock is right in line with the local going rate in every other gun shop around. And they give pretty good trade in amounts - usually around 70 to 75 percent of the going rate for new - but then I've seen guns I've traded to them in the shelves priced at higher than MSRP - and they sell.

usually the husband and wife are so damn gruff that I didn't bother. Why does this stereotype seem to be true more often than not with gun store owners?

The power of the Internet prevents "US" from over paying....
