I want to add a 45.. I would like something compact or sub compact. I don't want the polymer for the 45. I would like to stay below the $550-600 range. I do want stainless... what are some good choices. I would love to find a great gun at a great value and if I can find that for $400 or so all the better. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.. and post any pics if you have them.

if you like the 1911, springer mil spec.

you'll probably get lots of good advice, but try to make sure that you pick up all of the guns and find something that fits your hand.

ETA: sorry, I just noticed the compact or sub compact request. I think Springfield makes a "chamion" version, but I've not shot one. I like my Kimber compact, which I got used for just under $500, but that was a pretty good deal. You might be able to find something similar on gunbroker.

Might be able to find a SIG P245 in that "neighborhood". Try before you buy as it doesn't fit many people.

I know you don't want polymer and I am not exactly a Glockophile but the Glock 30 is a marvelous compact .45 and one of the only guns I regret selling.

Too bad you "aren't" into polymer. I gave up 3 1911's and have gone strictly Glock.

A Model 30 is with me right now and the 19 or 26 are ready for warmer weather.

I know everyone has their own likes and dislikes, but for me it is Glock all the way. Never had a burp or bobble with any of the 3.

What ever you get, look into a C-TAC or Predator IWB holster. I have both and they are excellent for CCW.

Good luck in your search.

The best .45 I've ever had was a USP Compact. I know it's polymer, but it's a great gun. For an all metal, stainless .45, I'd go with a Sig.

Got a XD40 in the works... So I don't want another polymer at least for now.

My <$500 compact 1911-Springer MicroCompact WWII. Steel frame, so heavier than the higher dollar Milspec Micros, and it comes with GI sights, which can be replaced with sights of your choice by any competent 'smith.
IIRC @$429

Springfield Armory microcompact 1911, it's an all-steel .45 ACP:

But then so is this Taurus revolver:

The "Loaded" Micro Compacts you linked are an alloy frame. The GI Micro's are steel. The GI weighs as much as the MilSpec Loaded with a light attatched........

I would go with a Commander sized 1911 then. I have a 70 Series LWT Commander that I love.
The gun I bet my life on is a Glock 23 though.

P90, you won't regret it...

Or P345 for a compact.

Does a nice Stainless Colt Commander count as a compact?

It would be a challenge to find a used Mark VI Detonics for much under $600, but it can be done. I saw one at a gun show this month which included 4 magazines and a nice holster. He was asking $600 and seemed eager to deal.

I have carried a Mark VI for just twenty years, now. It has never once failed to feed, eject or fire any reasonable load. I still have all the original springs and parts. It has likely digested 3,000-4,000 rounds over that time. [edit] I should add that spare parts and accessories are once again available for these pistols at Detonics USA (http://www.detonicsusa.com/index.html). Chances are, if you call them to ask a question, you'll be speaking to the owner of the company. I ordered a new set of Rosewood grips for my piece and they were delivered in about three days - during the Christmas mail rush. Since you're in Georgia, I'd say to see if you can stop by and meet the people at the company. They're good folks.

There is an active collector's group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DetonicsCollectors/?yguid=187621522)for the Detonics pistols on Yahoo. Whatever you spend (within reason) for a good Mark VI will be an investment which will likely outperform the Dow Jones Average! :D

I will also side with a Detonics. See them on Gunbroker once in a while for 500. Best little CCW gun around.

Another vote for the Ruger P-90.

Don't have a P345 but have heard the bugs were worked out and it's a fine pistol....has a pic railed model available too.

If you want a economical steel semi compact .45 and aren't hung up on 1911's, you can't go wrong with the Desert "baby" Eagle.

It has a full size grip and compact barrel. (10 round mag)

It is accurate and has a smooth DA/SA trigger. It is made by IMI in Israel from Tangfolio parts and is based on the 9mm IMF sidearm. It is indestructable, but heavy. Three dot sights

The blue steel can be had new for under $500 and a little over for stainless

Well, I certainly agree with the Colt advice, but that is an $800 pistol not a "great gun at a great value and if I can find that for $400":D

My vote goes to,

[X] SIG

-or-

[X] HK

If you look around you should be able to find one used or barely used in your price range.

If you've not already picked up your XD40, wait a couple of months and the XD will be shipping in 45ACP!! I also own an XD40 and it is excellent, btw.

That said, I own a SA Champion (1911 in 45ACP) and it is, w/o a doubt, the single most accurate gun I own - and maybe, have ever shot. And if you've seen me shoot, that's saying alot, b/c I am not real good, so it has to be the gun :P

Really any 1911 in the Springfield Armory lineup is worth the $$. They've good price/quality, parts are readily available so upgrading is easy AND you get a Lifetime warranty...can Kimber or Colt or Ruger match that? No.

just my 2 cents....
