www.gunguys.com -- most interesting anti site?

I like to read both sides of the argument, and also keep an eye on what the opposition is up to. VPC occasionally has some interesting (flawed) reports, Brady Campaign isn't good for much except their excellent by-state grading system and some amusingly over-the-top ads.

The most interesting site I've run across yet is www.gunguys.com

It's primarily a collection of media articles (like www.keepandbeararms.com) but tends to intersperse a lot more commentary, and has the morbidly fascinating "Mike Magnum" satire column.

I'd say that GG is a pretty worthy opponent, as the blog-style format, and careful mix of humor/hysteria with media reports is pretty cunningly done. Should appeal to the teen/twentysomething who wants to get their "guns are evil" fix. Worth taking a look at, unless you're ulcer-prone.

Oh, and please, please don't fly off the handle and send the webmaster emails like "UR A COMUNIST & U DON'T UNDERSTAND THE 2A LOL!!!!! " They apparently get lots of those (they claim), and it just makes all of us look bad, so please refrain.

Enjoy the Orwellianity, -MV

I don't think it's interesting at all. Last time I checked the site, (which was when I first heard about it about a month ago) I was relieved to find NO actual gun information there. I'd be worried if hunters or anyone was using them as a "legitimate" source of info. I'd get really worried if, for instance, they did gun reviews on hunting arms and such, but fortunately the words/content ratio is very very low.

This was interesting: Auxiliary police officer aims for dog, shoots fiance. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10642024/) They seem to think this was the NRA's fault.

Last time I checked, satire is actually supposed to be funny.

Let's be honest. How many people here are actually capable of seeing the intentional humor in anything anyone from The Other Side says? Close to none I would suppose.

Who blamed the NRA???

The link provided went to a very short news article with hardly any information, and I dont see any quotes from anybody about anything in there.

*raised eyebrow*

I'm quite capable of laughing at satire, even in the cases where it's grilling my sacred cow.

But, you know, a prerequisite to me laughing at it is, as I stated already, that the content actually be, oh, I dunno, funny. Sorry, but the gun guys website just comes off as hamfisted, condescending, and slobberingly didactic.

Who blamed the NRA???

They didn't. I suspect that the majority of the content on that site is nothing more than an RSS news feed keyed to search for stories that contain the word "gun."

They didn't.

Well, the story was listed below the following header, which would lead one to believe that they considered the NRA somewhat culpable. If they don't blame the NRA for this one, then they don't make that very clear.

This is it, the last America’s Shooting Gallery of 2005! Don’t worry, thanks to the NRA, there’ll be lots more killin’ to report next year. Have a great, safe, and, as always, gun free holiday weekend, and we’ll see you back here in 2006!

Uh, just curious, but who actuallly writes stuff like "UR A COMUNIST & U DON'T UNDERSTAND THE 2A LOL!!!!!"

I mean, who really writes emails like that, other than snot-nosed, pimply-faced "counterstrike kids" who spend so much time in front of computers that they get a burn off the glow of the screens?

And I just looked at the site.

Worthy opponents?

Seriously?

Here's the best these "worthy opponents" can come up with? This is satire? This is funny??????????????

"Let’s get this straight. A forty-year-old woman attacked her 73-year-old father with scissors? And her son shot her with a pellet gun he got for Christmas in the heart? But then, she lives to drive away, only to crash and die?

And then authorities rule the death a “justifiable homicide”??

We’re dumbstruck. Is this the kind of thing that becomes legal under a NRA “shoot first” law, or has someone in Kansas just been drinking too much eggnog? Either way, this has to be the looniest thing we’ve ever heard. What’s the matter with Kansas, indeed. "

Uh, yeah......got it......satire........

These guys were too busy abusing themselves to free porn on the Internet the day Jonathan Swift and "Modest Proposal" was discussed in class, right?

To be honest, after a little research on the net, I think there just might be a connection of some sort between www.gunguys.com and this link.

I mean, after all, the word "gun" is in both URLs..................

Hopefully nobody on this board, but it does apparently happen. If I wanted to wear tinfoil, I'd say that people on both sides of the political spectrum make up fake hatemail to make their opponents look dumb. But I'm even more cynical than that, and am confident that there are enough idjits in every political camp to send out plenty of dumb hatemail, making their own side look foolish in the process.

Years back, www.topfive.com published their humor list "The Top 14 Seminar Topics at the Scaled-Down NRA Convention" ( see http://www.topfive.com/arcs/t5050499.shtml) , which I found moderately funny, mainly #s 14, 9, and 3. They then collected their hatemail and issued the following:

The Top 16 Funniest Things We Received
in Response to Our "NRA Seminar" List

[Punctuation and spelling belong to the authors, not the editor.]

16) I THINK THAT THOSES SAYINGS ARE PREVERTED.

15) Yeah, I own a civilian AK. I own a civilian AR. And a buncha other toys.

14) [1st message] it is not a "notion" you moron, it is called the "2nd Admendment to the Constitution".....enough said.
[2nd message] ok I feel stupid, I misspelled "amendment", DOH!

13) Every opinion provokes an equal but opposite opinion, whether you want it to or not.

12) Making fun of a pack of squealing girly-men's pwecious wittle guns is sure to attract dozens upon dozens of quasi-coherent Randyan rants and buffoonish threats to water the apparently parched "Tree of Liberty" with gallon's of one's blood.

11) YOU HAVE ALREADY VIOLATED MY FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT BY TELLING ME NOT TO WRITE AND NOW YOU WANT TO TAKE AWAY MY 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS AS WELL

10) Didn't know you were a bunch of liberal pansies.

9) Do the letters F.O. mean anything to you?

8) There may not be a vast gobal conspirocy to ban guns, [...]

7) I'm leaving your Top 5 list because I think you're a pinko bastard.

6) Go f**k yourself you moron.

5) Bite It. Stupid people who don't seem to rember if it wasn't for guns then ythis country would not be here today.

4) Another point is that if I write a sentence of the form, "Because blah blah blah, X" You can't say that because of the exact nature of the blah, blah, blah, "not X", or Y was meant instead of X.

3) If you aren't prepared to eat your neibor's cat, you aren't prepared.

2) I do not condone anyone for their choices.

and the Number 1 Funniest Thing We Received in Response to Our "NRA Seminar" List...

1) I tell you what buddy I own tons of guns and I kill poor little defensless animals and I happen to have a huge [censored].

These guys were too busy abusing themselves to free porn on the Internet the day Jonathan Swift and "Modest Proposal" was discussed in class, right?

No argument from me there. I don't claim that they're literary geniuses. However, I do think they produce material that teen/twentysome readers would find convincing. I expect that your average MTV American teen would find their site more convincing than www.keepandbeararms.com

Their overall literary merit is just an academic point. Their potential ability to influence (dependent largely on how much traffic they get) is of consequence. VPC produces some good "damn lies and statistics" to quote in the news, but nothing terribly interesting. Brady Campaign makes some poorly-proofread press releases. I just find it interesting that folks with apparently minimal funding have put together a site which would be reasonably attractive to many young Americans.

What thinks? -MV

There's nothing funny about that webpage, and I can take a few jabs.

After reading one of the "Mike Magnum" articles, I've found that it is in incredibly bad taste, and doesn't contain an ounce of thought.

Maybe it's just me -- I tend to be into "smart" humor. :scrutiny:

Ok, I read the "satire" on the NRA.
As the joke thread moderator of several sites I see the problem.
One of the main components of humor is that it has to be based in fact.
I only read about half of the article but it was obvious that there wasn't enough fact to credit anything written as even a half truth.
I can see how people who are emotionally invested in the anti-gun mentality would suck that stuff down like dollar shots at happy hour.
Now I have to go do a little reloading and clear my head. :banghead:

And yet thatís exactly what this law is. Someone steal your pudding pop in first grade? Go shoot them, because they attacked you, and you have a right to fight back. Someone accidentally open the door to your apartment? Chase them down and end their life. Someone use your driveway to turn around? Thatís trespassingĖ they must die!

Sound scary? It is, and yet the NRA is behind it full throttle. Theyíve promised to bring this law to all fifty states, including yours. This isnít a theory, or a dire warning about something that might happen under the right circumstances. This is happening, has already happened. Gary Lee Hill is a killer walking free, because this law has already passed in Colorado.

Blaming the NRA? I'd say it's pretty damn obvious. This is on their front page considering the shoot first law. Notice they talked about that case in Colorado which we discussed here. See any blatant half truths/half of the story going on? hahaha, the stupidity of this site IS actually somewhat comical, I just love the using a driveway as a turn around example. Because, you know, since the shoot first law has come in to place, there have been hundreds of instances of people being shot while using a driveway to turn around. I am now afraid to do it! If I trespass, I must die! :uhoh:
