SA,TDA,DAO,Safe Action

Fact is, there are many different "good" pistols and revolvers. Therein lies my situation, like many of yours I speculate. My "carry handguns" consist of 1911s, TDA, DAO, and safe action pistols, and revolvers. That is several holsters, and since I enjoy reloading everything, it also consists of several loading dies, and different powders etc. I some times think about selling everything but a couple, and work on perfection for a couple or so. A lot can be said about carring only one type of action, for familaity when the chips are down. Fact is however, they are ALL Keepers, just can't part with them, I added three more in the last three months. Is this contageous ?? :D

It only gets worse.
I have a big plastic tote FULL of holsters, 7 metallic reloading presses, 4 shotshell presses, a safe that is over double capacity, and it goes on and on. Just the components for the 17 calibers I reload take up a ton of room. My reloading/gun area is about 300 square feet and it is PACKED, looks like a pack rat hole....
I wouldn't sell off and work with only one or two platforms. Most of my shooting IS on just two platforms (S&W revolvers and 1911 types) but I enjoy the others way too much. I also feel shooting something different again is like the 'trick of the day', a little trick to keep my mind in the game by using something that I am not as familiar with. Something that isn't intimately familiar requires proper fundamentals to shoot well, and picking up something I haven't shot in months or even years brings me back to the basics.
It works as a good excuse in my mind, YMMV.

I carry DA/DAO autos because I also carry DA revolvers and the training transitions well between these firearms. I have no serious carry SA autos in my collection. I have had 'em in the past, but don't see the need. I can do anything with a DA/DAO that I'd do with an SA and they're safer to carry, to boot!
If you carry an SA auto, you should sell everything else and just own and shoot SAs if you want to be proficient and safe with them. That's why I don't own 'em, 'cause I ain't givin' up my revolvers!!!!!:D I mean, I could own and shoot 'em, just not seriously train with 'em. If I had an SA big caliber gun now, I wouldn't sell it because of training. I'd still shoot it if I liked it, if it were accurate and reliable. But, I wouldn't carry it. I feel more proficient with DAs and DAOs.

I think that waaaay to much is made of:
1. Standardizing on one action type.
2. The "difficulty" of the 1911 platform.
If you want to standardize, more power to you, this is a free country.
If you have convinced yourself the SA manual of arms is too complex for yourself, I'll respect your judgement of your abilities.

I would have to disagree, on several points.
I can do anything with a DA/DAO that I'd do with an SA and they're safer to carry, to boot!
1. "Safe to carry" lies less with the hardware and more with the software. All those LEO Glock NDs come to mind. Glocks are perfectly safe. It takes a faulty user to violate Rule Three, not a faulty weapon.
I have no doubt that you can do whatever you need to with DA/DAO.
If you carry an SA auto, you should sell everything else and just own and shoot SAs if you want to be proficient and safe with them.
2. I am no tacticool operator type, but even my currently limited training regimen allows for easy transition from action type and carry location. I can tell which gun is which merely by gripping it, the difference is so great. I think the confusion would come into play if one were to own two similar pistols with different DA operation: S&Ws in traditional DA with a safety vs DA with a decocker only vs DAO, for example.
In my case, my most common IWB carry under a cover garment is a 1911 at 0400. Every once in a while a revolver rides there & causes no wierding out. Why? Because they feel completely different in the packing and in the grip. On the draw, if my hand feels "1911," it gets into a high grasp, strokes off the thumb safety (then rides it), and the pad of my index finger lightly caresses the takedown pin. If my hand feels "S&W Revolver," it gets into an even higher grip and my index finger gets cozy with the frame betwen trigger guard and cylander.
If my CCW is in a front pocket, I know it will be a DAO auto or DA revo. Same with ankle carry.
The SA manual of arms is not some sort of mystical and difficult to master kata or dance step with athletic flips and spins. My wife was not a shooter when we met & she figured that the 1911 was the best manual of arms for here when it came to serious social pieces. Even so, her P32 causes no confusion when she draws from the pocket.

Hmm, I agree with jfruser, I carry each type, and have no problem with the manual of arms. I just keep adding to the collection. It would be difficult to part with any ot them. I used to do a lot of trading in my younger days, but I just buy "keepers" nowadays, I have so many, that I don't have time to shoot all of them regularly, oh well they are "good investments" and should not go down in value. It is hard to pass on a good deal for a Keeper! :)

What about the DAO that have a repeat striker capability and those that don't? To refer to both types as "DAO" is a bit misleading. Is there another term for one of them?
