SC gun show

I went to the gun show at Jamil Temple yesterday (Columbia, SC). All of you SC guys - is it just me, or have all of the shows in Columbia gone down hill over the past few years? Prices keep going up at shows even though the same items are NOT going up in SGN or online sources.

Some of the more outrageous things I saw:
Blued Delta Elite - looked used, tag said it was new - $1000
USED Sig 228 - $750
Case of Wolf 7.62x39 - $105
Top Folding stock for 12ga shotguns - $75
SKS stripper clips - $1 each
Guy selling 1911 grips for $45. Bushings and screws extra, at $15 and $10, respectively. Oh, but if you buy the grips, you get a $5 discount  These are the same type of grips I got from Natchez for $38 including screws and bushings.

Naturally all of the ARs were about $2-300 more than they should have been.

Interesting things that I saw:
Engraved HK P7 - no price tag, but neat to look at. I wouldn't buy it anyway
AR15 chambered in .50 Beowulf
Magnum Research Mountain Eagle .22lr pistol. Only the second one I've ever seen.

The only thing approaching a deal I saw was a used (95%) Sig 228 with 4 non-castrated mags and a Bianchi holster for $725.

Now, I understand that things will be more expensive at gun shows so the dealer can make a profit. But do they not realize that lower prices = more sales? I would have bought 2 Wilson mags for my 1911 if they had been $25 each. Since they were $32 each, I bought none. Dealer price is about 20, so the guy could have made $10 profit. Instead he made zero. Most of the time I walk out of shows with nothing, then go and give my gunsmith buddy $25 to transfer things for me. I'm willing to support local guys and dealers at shows, but their prices more often than not make me laugh.

What is up with gun shows?

Look on the bright side... you got to hold an MG-42.

The P228 for $750 was the same one that guy tried to sell me last August--$750 with 2 factory postbans and 1 Eagle 17 round preban. A local shop sold me my P228 (also used) for $450 with two factory prebans 4 hours after i saw that particular gem

The P228 with four factory prebans, night sights, and the Bianchi holster was nice... i could always use one for my left hand, you know.

I didn't even bother to go. I've about had it up to here with the outrageous prices that the dealers think they can charge. I guess they are selling to somebody though, or they wouldn't have the gunshows.

It's pretty grim. I think it's due to the fact that we're a captive audience. JPoe and I walked around and it's always the same old folks.

I've about decided that I'm going to start driving to Charlotte for the shows. Should be more competition, so better prices.

Locally, Lawmans is fine for used guns and Palmetto has a new manager (Jim) who is trying hard. Lots more in Palmetto than there used to be.

The Carolina Trader is usually a good resource if you know your prices. Those used 870 Expresses for $300 make me  .

I agree..... same old people..... However, my brother did pickup a p-32 for $209. And I saw another p-32 (new) for $199. Both prices were better than what I paid for mine at Lawman's just a few weeks ago. I did pick up some ammo while I was there, but thats it.

I think the gun show is more for "just looking" than anything else.... unless you really see a deal.

The Jamil show is better than the one at the Fairgrounds...... but thats not saying much!

Haven't been, but don't plan to go. I went to one this fall here in Spartanburg and it was a joke. Everything was over-priced and the vendors acted like they were doing you a favor to let you look at everything.

HAWK, i did that show and was very polite to everyone. plus i had some screaming deals.
the SC shows are for crap. charlotte is the 19th and while its a big show you have a hard time finding anything small due to the size. we call the charlotte show the AR show for reasons obvious to anyone who has ever attended.
i think the main problem w/ shows is this. table clerks are not salesmen. a real salesman knows how to treat people and wants contact w/ as many people as possible to be positive. walk in my store and see. i take care of my customers. i dont just display the product and wait for you to walk up to the counter. i want to be involved in your purchase at the base level. i want to help you find whats right for you. the gun show table clerks stand there yaking w/ each other and if you ask a question they smartass you. i became so irate at the last charlotte show i actually cursed a vendor out. VERY out of character for me.
remember 90% of these guys are selling out of thier trunk. they have no salesmanship skills or reputation to fall back on.

around here is similar. There is a gun collectors assoc. that promotes a great show twice a year.remember 90% of these guys are selling out of thier trunk. they have no salesmanship skills or reputation to fall back on.

I can tell by the promoter if I want to go or not. Thankfully, I travel for my job and can sample these shows all over the south. Just retutned from Tulsa show, will return to that one many times I hope!:D

holy crap people from SC!! i thought i was the only one down here who knew how to use the internet :neener:

i haven't been to any gun shows but have been to palmetto and lawmen's, they had some okay prices.

BTW, are there any ranges to rent guns in SC? i'm really wantin to test out some pistols before i become 21 so i can figure out what i wanna buy. if not, where's the closest one?

RB, tthere's Shooter's Choice here in Cola. I don't go there, so not sure what theyy have for rentals. Cohiba can clue you in for your area.

There's a bunch of us here from SC, BTW. :)

Eight or nine years ago, the shows were pretty good. I've noticed that we seem to get second rate vendors now.

Another SC guy here...

I went to the Jamil show too. Enjoyed meeting you Al! As a newbie, it was interesting to walk around with someone who knows what they're talking about. I thought it was pretty cool to see all those guns and related "stuff" in one place like that - but then like I said - I'm a newbie. I didn't really have anything to compare it to. I didn't see any particularly great prices either. Found out I could have saved about $30 on my new XD-9 if I had waited and bought it there - but so what... I didn't want to wait two months for the show - and Shooter's Choice threw in $24 worth of range time with the sale too - so it's basically a wash. Already have 450 rounds through it now. I tried to find some extra mags for it at the show, but nobody had any. I did pick up some ammo from Georgia Arms though - and I'm anxious to go try some of it. Maybe I'll try one of the larger shows sometime.

I've been to a few of the Jamil temple shows and they are pretty bad. I usually get a kick out of the white supremacy/southern heritage or whatever they call themselves table :D

Between the crappy gun shows, and my company not allowing employees to buy guns direct from Ellet Bros anymore, my wallet has become very sad

Glad I haven't made it down to the Columbia show yet. Sounds like it's the one here in Spartanburg, worthless, and I'd hate to drive that far for nothing. Where's lawman's located?

COHIBA, were exactly is your store? I work downtown here not to far from Whitney road.

VaughnT
April 8, 2003, 11:10 PM
Hawk, I went over to Rex's once and really liked the folks. It's not too far from work, but what I really liked is that they have just about every Benchmade knife in the line. It's a good, clean place with a nice selection of stuff...something to suit everybody.

If you like camping and the outdoors, don't miss the chance to visit DiamondBrand Outfitters just down the road in Naples. Their motto: If we don't have it, you don't need it.

They literally have everything, including royal robbins. Great selection of anything you might need or want if you're heading out into the woods (not hunting gear, but everything you can't get at wallyworld). It's two-frickin'-floors!

Mr. Thompson, I'm in. My schedule kinda sucks, but I'll be more than glad to schedule something in. Just let me know when and where.

Al Thompson
April 8, 2003, 11:20 PM
I'm just Al. Lawmans is off of Broad River road. Take the St. Andrews road exit from I-26, turn east. Go about 1 mile, turn before you get to the Chinese Restaurant, it's next to Fat Buddy's Grill. In the same shopping center as Bi-Lo. If you go too far, you'll hit Broad River. Big intersection. In that case, take a left and then the next left into the shopping center. Lawmans is on your right.

Vaughn, what about Grady's in Anderson? I've been there a couple of times and really enjoyed it. We don't have any place like it here in Columbia.

Actually I was at Shooters Choice tonight..... my brother (SportCat) and I were trying out hiw P-32 he got at the show. I have had mine for about 2 months..... Anyway..... I have a membership there and if my memory serves me, you CAN rent guns there. However, I believe you have to be 21 to shoot unless you are with a parent.

I think SportCat and I went thru 300 rounds tonight, between our 2 P-32's, a Browning .380 BDA, Gock 22, and his two Berettas.

The membership is $100 per year. Gets you unlimited range time which normally runs you $12 an hour.

Those of us from the Columbia or even SC area should try to get together sometime.....

Hey, don't forget me! I want to go shoot!
I missed the show this weekend, had a date with a bottle of Jack Daniels and a beach house on Holden Beach, NC. But from the previous shows, I know I didn't miss much! Was the same bozo there asking $2500 for a pair of Colt XSE's? I'm still trying to figure this guy out. I did miss out on getting some ammo from GA arms. But every now and then, you can get some good deals. I got a set of original Colt WWII grips for $10 for my .45 at one show. And at the fairgrounds show I found a set of McCormick slim grips and bushings for $25. Normally $40? + s&h. Now granted, your not going to find a NIB AR-15 for $350, or a Colt .45 for a steal, but keep your eyes open and off the expensive toys, and you would be suprised at what you can find. Now there were a couple of guys selling SKS acessories for TWICE the SGN prices!

BUT----I could drop $$$ in a heartbeat at either Grady's or Diamond Brand. I'm only about an hour from either. We did most of our Christmas shopping for our sons at Grady's and were just at Diamond Brand last month buying them hiking boots & socks for their summer trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in NM.

I've been to the state run rifle range in Pauline several times. There are also 2 rifle ranges in Sumter National Forest in Union County. One is called Fairforest and the other is Philson Crossroads. Both are not far from Cross Anchor/Enoree area. I usually go to Rex's to shoot handguns. I've been twice to Polk County Gun Club to a NRA-sponsored women's only trap shoot. It was loads of fun!

My main interest is handguns. The last few I have bought and the last long guns bought in our family have been purchased (new) from Fast Cash Pawn Shop on Hwy. 221 between Spartanburg and Chesnee. Todd will give you a deal...tell him Becky sent you!

i have known billy and todd and, god forbid, ramos for many years. good bunch of guys. the next time your on 221 shoot up to the royal movie theater. if you were standing at the ticket box and looked left you'll see a blue line flag outside suite 14.
thats me.

i actually have permission to use the chesnee police range. as long as we are shooting 25 yards or some of us could get together here at the store and ride up.

the pauline range has improved since jackie took over. that Ahole ed browne ran more good people away than he kept.

I'm not sure who Ramos is...but I recognized Farron right off. We had our Lab up to him some years back for some training.

yup i've only been shootin for less than a year too, i'm not good but not terrible. i had to buy both my rifles, my parents don't mind guns but always nag me about how i spend my money so gettin them to sign for a handgun's bout outta the question :banghead:

only bad thing about pauline range is they took out the handgun range. i've talked a lot to the guy workin there b/c he used to be with the sheriff's office and i'm always askin him stuff about it, anyways he said a guy who has a construction company said he'd make the handgun burns(?) for free if they could get it approved. they were supposed to get the money for it this year but they cut money from the education budget so there's no way dnr's gettin any for handgun range.

he said there's one in boiling springs somewhere past lake bowen that i'm gonna go and try to find sometime.

oh, for ya'lls information i think NRA rifleman mag said there's a gun show the 28th in sptbg at waccamaw, probably like the last one everyone said was poopy

the pistol range at pauline will not get approval.
the range is a two side set up if people are downrange on the 100 then someone is going to have to be there w/ them. that same person also has to be on the rifle/200 range and be able to see the shooters. jackie is a good guy but he aint 2 good guys. the state is not going to hire another person to man the joint w/ jackie and a volunteer is out due to liability concers.
get up w/ me and we might go to the police range some day after 1800.

I thought there was a big ol' gun club just south of S'burg...between Hwy 56 and Pine Street (maybe the S'burg Shooter's Club?). IIRC, just take 56 south until you come to a big intersection with a bi-lo at your four o'clock and a winn dixie at your two o'clock. Turn left and go a few miles....watch for the sign on your right.

It's not too far from where the Union Highway meets, but I can't recall the name of the connecting road.

Al, Grady's is nice, but they are a bit high, I thought. Now for really high pistol prices, but a great selection, you really should check out White Jones on the 28 Bypass! Grady's has some great people and very good selection.

If you ever get the chance to travel to Asheville, definitely stop in at Diamond Brand Outfitters. Ten times what Grady's is, but no "hunting" gear.

I'll be up in S'Burg this friday PM, I hope, to settle a tab with COHIBA. I'll take the time to drive by the club I saw some time back and see if it's still in operation.

I normally shoot over at the public range in Gaffney. Not much further than the one over in Pauline, and I kinda like it better. You can shoot 100 yd rifle and it's got a small pistol range. The RO's are a couple of good guys that keep everything safe.

The range that Vaughn's talking about is Spartanburg shooters club in Whitestone. It's only a shotgun range, but they've got trap, skeet and sporting clays. Nice setup really, and some pretty friendly people.

There's also an IDPA/IPSC club over in Moore, that has shoots every other Saturday. I haven't been in while becuase works been hectic.

I am absolutely AMAZED at how many SC folks are on here.

I'm a member at MCRC. I believe we're allowed to take 10 guests with us during the week and 4 on the weekends (due to matches). Everyone saying "we should get together" isn't going to make it happen.

There is an IPSC match Saturday (4/12), and I will be there (unless it is raining). I won't be competing, but I'll be there. Anybody that wants to meet up, let's make some kind of plan. Of course, later in the day the pistol bays will be open again and we can do some shooting.

Any takers?

Yep,

I actually went to the Jamil Temple three times this past weekend. Like my brother OutfieldJack said, I did pick-up a parkerized P-32 for $219. I did think prices on other items were high, but the Pawn Shop place from Greenville did have some great prices.

A place y'all may want to check out is Bear Creek Firearms in Prosperity. They used to only be open on Saturdays, but now have expanded to weekday hours. Real friendly people (family operation), ordered me a Beretta 92 and saved me $90.

White Jones Hardware is another place in Anderson you may want to check out. Be sure you go to the bigger store which is in the east side of town.

Like mentioned before, Grady's in Anderson does have some nice stuff, but I didn't see any deals.

Agreed, the Pawnshop from Greenville (Fast Cash Pawn Shop, I think) definitely has the best prices at that show. I picked up a used 870 ($149, I think) and a new P32($199) from them last fall. I usually go to the Jamil show just for the powder and primers. Saves on the HazMat fee. Shooter's Choice has such awful prices on reloading supplies and they're pretty much the only game in town that I know of for retail supplies, so it's mail-order for bullets/brass/tools and the Jamil show for posder/primers. Anyone know of any fairly-local places that have fair prices on powder/primers?

I think it'd be great to meet at MCRC sometime, but I'm not sure if this weekend is the time. I'd like to meet sometime when we know we'll be able to shoot! Maybe the next weekend (19th or 20th?)?

Al, you know, I'd never heard of Lawman's and I live on that side of town too! Have to check it out tomorrow.

I'm familiar with almost all of the shops you guys are talking about. I went to Clemson for 2 years so I frequented the Grady's and the White Jones. I never found anything that I felt I really needed to spend that much money on.

If there is enough interest I'll start a new thread just for a SC shoot (or someone else can do it, whatever). I'm pretty much open on the weekends. There is also a range in Whitmire if we get too many people for MCRC. That's where I went before I was a member.

Al, yeah, I visited Hiller's once as well. Their selection was geared mostly toward shotgun shell reloading and their prices were about the same as Shooter's Choice. It appears that they don't do much business, because most of their inventory is covered in dust and faded. I bought a box of Rem 9 1/2 primers when I was there because I wanted to try them and Shooter's Choice didn't have any and they only had a box of 100 that looked about as old as I am and was held together with masking tape....

Al Thompson

Loach, a month or two back I picked up some large pistol primers and a poundd of 231. IIRC, the powder was 23 bucks, the primers were 16 (?). Rarely reload, so don't know if those were good or bad prices. I really like Hillers compared to Lowes or HD, so I like to support them when I can.

BTW, Lawman's Safety has two quirks - one, their open 9 to 6, M-F. Two, if they have a used firearm you think is a good price or you may want it, put it on layaway. They move a tremendous amount of guns through the store. Monday a week ago they had two .32 S&W revolvers I sorta liked. Their gone as of today.
