Recoil pads.

I heard that the Knoxx compstock reduces recoil around 50%. But it's too pricey for me right not so I'm looking for others. I have a 12 gauge Mossberg Mariner. Do I want to replace the whole stock with another one? Or should I get a pad that slips on the regular stock? If so, what brand & size. I don't want to take the gun apart. I'm afraid I might break it or lose something.

Sims pads are excellent. Places like Cabelas and Brownells stock them. There are pre-fitted as well as slip-on models. I don't own a shotgun so I can't help you with size.

As long as the gun fits you properly there is no need to replace or alter the stock itself. Note that adding a slip-on pad to the existing stock will change the length of pull.
Several companies make pre-fit pads that only require removing the ecrews from the factory pad and putting them back in with the new pad in place. See http://www.eabco.com/Limbsaver.html for one example, I like LimbSavers but some folks swear by Decelerators etc. YMMV.
Adding some weight to the gun can help reduce felt recoil also...
