Fixed telescoping stock install on AR15

I'm in the process of building my lower from JT Distributing, and need to install the telescoping stock (fixed, that is). The instructions from AR15.com were great up until then, and if I had a fixed stock, I'd be set, but I can't quite grasp how to put on the telescoping stock.

Is the special wrench a requirement?

Thanks!

Michael

Well maybe not a requirement but advised. A GI combo wrench will only run you $15 or so. You use it to tighten the locking nut against the end plate for the reciever ext. (or if you're not up on the terminology " the castle nut looking thingy against the ovalish plate for the tube that the sliding part of the stock mounts on"). You're supposed to tighten to 40 +-2 inch-pounds and stake.

Get the wrench. You don't want to mess up that tiny little hole that's used for leverage for tightening and loosening the locking ring.

Not only that, but get a decent wrench. They don't cost that much. I got a good laugh at my dealers expense. He bought a cheap wrench, after all you arn't going to be using it that much. It broke the first time he tried to use it. So now, he is going to pay for two wrenches. If there is anything I hate, it is to be in the middle of a project and not have the right tools, and then have to wait to get one that I ordered. Don't order one, then wait, and have it break the first time you try to use it.

In the mean time, you can hand tighten that nut and fire the rifle. Nothing is going to happen. It will loosen up, so keep an eye on it until you get the wrench.

I agree with 444...get a good wrench. I got a cheapo AR stock/1911 bushing type wrench and broke it the second time using it.

As for staking, I just went with a dab of blue loc-tite on the threads.

I have never staked mine or used loc-tite but the loc-tite is probably a good idea. I "play" with my ARs a lot. I try this stock and that stock with this upper and that upper. So, I don't want to have the stock semi-permently mounted. But, they do loosen up. Not quickly, but it is a good idea to check it when you are cleaning the rifle. It is more of something that you need to keep and eye on, but not worry about.
Now that my ARs are getting to be pretty much the way I want them (yeah, right), I may loc-tite my stocks at some point.

OK, I'll try to find the wrench. Now, anybody got any installation instructions, hopefully with pictures?

Thanks for the replies so far. My pappy always said, you can buy good tools once or cheap tools several times. Reckon he's still right!

Here is the Army's Maintenance Manual (http://www.mcdl.org/Manuals/Manuals/Maintenance/TM9-1005-319-23.pdf) for the M4/M16A2 (325 pages in PDF format). It shows how to remove/install the buttstock.
