Just curious...would you/do you use the same one to break it in and make sure it won't fail? use a copy and only use your carry for occasional range tests? use a different one (name/model) alltogether?

Depends on the sport. No reason not to shoot your carry piece in things like IDPA and other stock compititions.

For stock gun type competitive use I have and continue to use carry guns. If possible though I like to have a duplicate to beat on the range and in competition keeping one clean and tight for carry use.

Always have. Even when I was going through my Diry Harry phase of carrying a Model 29 in a shoulder rig.

IPSC was designed as a PRACTICAL match , to practice for the real thing not a game . My IPSC gear was always exactly what I carried. Then I was ready for the real thing !

Preferably, two of the same model. One for carry/home defense use only. I've had small parts break on stock IDPA guns during matches...lost count of how many rounds the gun has shot...sloppy maintenance.:o

Smart idea for training and familiarity and truly knowing whether the gun works.
Not so smart, especially in the holster/carry mode, if you are wanting to WIN the game.
I respect that approach and have done it. Only time I came in last was with an untried mag that interfered with the trigger to make mysterious no-hammer-drop failures. Got really good in tap-rack-bang!!! Then there was that pair of lousy 40-yard targets....

I try to run through my gammit of carry guns once a year as a second gun, but usually shoot my match gun as first gun. All my guns pretty much work the same - point and squeeze.

There's an old saying that Trapshooters have repeated thru the years...
" Beware the man with one gun "
