Congrats on the "new" M-1. I got mine (also a SA/SG) last week.
As far as I can tell, the receiver is from October of 1941.
You should look through the www.jouster.com website. There is a TON of good info out there.

Ed,
Congrats! Your first?
I already have two, but may sell one to a friend as a favor... then might try to order one more from the CMP before year's end.
Nothing quite feels like that 'ol M1, huh?
Clean her up and go SHOOT her!!

RustyHammer - The CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) sells US military surplus rifles (mostly M-1s and 1903 variants, with some others thrown in as they become available). They even have some .22 target rifles (like Kimber 82s) at times
In order to be eligible for purchase, you have to belong to a CMP affiliated club, have competed in an event of at least 50 rounds within the past 5 years (or have proof of military service). You then submit a packet including proof of the above, proof of age (copy of birth certificate), some basic demographic info and a notarized document affirming the truthfullness of the info you have submitted. You also include a list of what you want to buy, and either a check or credit card info.
Although the guns are graded by the CMP, it is still somewhat of a crapshoot as to what you get. All of these are old, and most have seen pretty serious use. When you receive them, they will be packed with cosmoline, and the stocks are usually very dark and full of scratches and dings. Most have been rebuilt at least once.
That being said, it's a great opportunity to get classic firearms at a decent price.
They have a fairly good website at www.odcmp.com, which will answer almost any questions and give you an idea of what they have available. The info I posted was just off the top of my head and may not be complete, so I highly recommend checking out their site.

You can also join the Garand collectors association to qualify for the club membership. Got mine in January. Love it!

I need to do two things ... get a stable income, and join a CMP club. since I have military marksmanship experience, I don't have to worry about the competitiosn. then I can send off for a garand. it'd be sweet.

Sorry. Not enough. You'd need 50 attorneys to satisfy the CMP's Marksmanship requirement.
Don't miss.... :D

Anyone have any suggestions of fufilling the competition requirements? Organized shooting events are non-existent out here in the sticks..
When I was in high school we used to have a 'rifle club' that shot indoors at the school (whole different era in NY my how times have changed in 10 years, sigh).. I believe it was in some way affiliated with CMP as we had both bolt .22's from them and garands..
Does anyone know if there is a way that I can get some type of notarized letter from my former coach that would satisfy the requirement?
The thought of a Garand to stand next to my '03 and .30 Carbine really tickles my feather :D
Thanks in advance,
Leo

Most likely the answer is "YES".... IF the activity in question took place within the last 5 years (CMP requirement).

243 Shooter:
Get a couple of your buddies together for an afternoon of target shooting. Shoot 50 rounds or more. Keep a record of it. ( The targets are sufficient record) Have each buddy sign an affidavit ( a piece of typing paper with a statement declaring that 50 rounds or more were fired on such n such day by such n such folks). Have it notorized. (your buddies will have to be present for the notory to verify thier signitures) and you will have satisfied that particular CMP requirement.
It sounds much more complicated than it really is.
