Full size, thin, light, caliber that starts with a 4, but not a 1911. Does it exist?

I carry a 1911 now. Actually I carry one of two, either a full sized and heavy steel framed 5" govt. model, or a light and handy 4" barreled, alloy framed Colt CCO. I really love the CCO but it's getting old and I hate to think about what I'd do if it broke. I wouldn't like carrying the heavy Govt. model all the time. So I'm thinking about getting an additional gun for a CCW. Now, I know there are other 1911s out there that are the same size as the CCO, but I'd like to open my mind to other possibilities.

Are there any other comparable guns in .40S&W or 45ACP? It would have to have at least a 4" barrel, be about 1" thick, expecially in the handgrip area (No double stack mags, I have a CZ40 which would be perfect except that it's too fat), short grip would be a plus(Colt CCO uses a 6 or 7 round Officer's mag) and it would have to weigh under 30 oz. The CCO has an SA trigger of course, but I wouldn't mind a DA or DA/SA.

SIG 220 and 245 are single stack 45's. The 220 is full size, the 245 is compact size. The alloy frames make them light, but they seem a bit thicker than 1911's.

How about a BHP in .40?

Ruger p345

This is what I have and it fits your criteria I believe.

1. .45
2. Thinish. It is 1" along the slide and the magazine is not double stacked
3. Under 30 oz. (29 and change, I think)
4. A DA/SA
5. Not a 1911

Hope this helps

I've had my Ruger KP 345 for over a year now, with no malfunctions. It's a great carry gun. Here's my range report from December 04 with some pics that show the "thin-ness" element.

Uh? ANY alloy/light framed 1911/clone in single stack with a 4 inch barrel and thin grips meets your needs. The standard slide width of a 1911 is less than an inch and the frame width is just over 3/4. Git yer calipers out!

I wanted to see if there's anything else that fits the need also.

'Scuze me. I reread everything and now I see. I've been considering a Kahr K9 Elite for a spare CCW. However, 1911s do tend to spoil one... :)

Have you seen the Kahr P45? Very light, about 18 oz. A Les Baer Stinger alloy should come under the weight limit, as does a Colt Defender, although it is 3".

Glock 36.
Barrel is 3.86 " I believe and width 1.1. Single stack.

S&W 4040. Scandium alloy frame, so it's the same size and weight as the very-well-regarded 3913 LadySmith, but it's .40 S&W.

How can you go wrong?

As much as I would like to recommend the Glock 10mm, it does not fit into your critieria.

My Hi-Power in .40 would, as would the Sig 239.

Try a S&W 4566. 8+1 of .45 ACP and it's as flat as a 1911. If that's too big, go for a 4516 or 457. The former is stainless and the latter blued, but they both carry 7+1 rounds of .45 and fit the 8-round mags of their larger brothers.

That Kahr 45 is quite thin. I handled one at a local toy shop (417guns in Springfield, MO, for you locals) and was impressed with that more than any other aspect of its size. I have never seen a 45 that thin.

I must also say that the Taurus 24/7 is about as thin a 45 as you will find beyond the Kahr. While it is double stacked, it is as thin as a single stack in every way. Taurus just crammed the 45 into a 9mm sized gun. For comparison the dimensions are roughly between a Glock 17 (yes 17, not 21) and Glock 19. The mags are even thin. My review is around here somewhere. I sold mine in a moment of weakness (Witness Elite Stock was calling my name), but still consider it to be a pretty amazing 45 for CCW use.

They're not in production anymore, but you might want to consider one of the S&W 10xx series pistols. Either full-size 5" or 4.25" Commander-sized. Their single-stack and about the same size as a 1911. There are six different variations including traditional slide mounted safety/decocker, frame mounted decocker (ala Sig), and DAO. They are extremely strong and you can still find them at reasonable prices if you're patient. Personally I would recommend the 1076 with the 4.25" barrel and frame mounted decocker.

I have never seen a 45 that thin. Boy that P45 does look kinda cool. I'm put off by that 3.5" barrel though. I don't even like the stubby little Officer's sized 1911s. If Kahr made one with a 4" barrel, that would be cool. The T40 looks a lot like what I'm looking for at only .94" wide and 27 oz.

CZ75 in 40SW. You know, I've always wanted a '75 in 40S&W. I've carried my 9mm '75 IWB though and it felt real chunky. Still the CZ75 Compact in .40 looks very attractive. I need to see if I can find a local store with a '75 Compact and try it on with my holster, see how it feels.

S&W is making a version of the 1911 with their scandium alloy. Gov't size comes in under 30oz.

The problem with the .40 BHP is that it's still heavy. 33oz unloaded. And it has a double stack grip (albiet a pretty darn thin one).

I can't belive nobody has said this yet...

Taurus PT145. It's light and really flat considering it holds 10 rounds of 45acp. Accurate, reliable and tough. It has a manual thumb safety positioned perfectly for a 1911 person too. :)
