For cold weather carry - what type of ammo do you prefer?

In a few posts I've started concerning my CCW choice I've read a few comments about how some people change their carry ammunition during colder weather. They are concerned with under penetration of JHP ammo going through thick jackets and multiple layers of cloths.

Going from those comments, I'm wondering how many people change to a different type of ammo when they carry during colder months and how many keep the same ammo.

What are your thoughts?

In the winter, I go to 260 gr LSWC in my Taurus 450. I always carry Fed 180 gr Hyro-Shoks in my G23 and 27.

In OK, generally not a big consideration; rarely have people wearing parkas and such.

Same here. I stick with Gold Dots the whole year. Even if the hollow point fails to open the reciever will still have at least 2 .45" holes in them. :D

I change my carry gun sometimes. I sometimes pack my CZ-40 under thick clothing, but usually it's my Colt CCO. In the summer, on hot days wth a T-shirt and shorts, I carry either the Colt or my J-frame 642. I don't carry my .38 on cold days when I can conceal something bigger.

However, I always use the same ammo with each gun. I test my carry ammo very carefully, shoot a lot of it to check POI = POA and that it functions 100%. I like to know the ammo will function as expected. If you change your ammo, it throws unpredictability into the equation.

Besides, what's the worst that will happen? It will clog the HP and it won't expand? If so, you'll end up with FMJ anyway. If you are worried about under-penetration, get hotter and heavier ammo. Test it with old clothing and jugs of water, sand or clay.

it is going to be in the 80s this weekend.......besides, my small carry is in my pocket all the time. But, on the other hand, if I am at the mall eyeing the babes, it might get a little warm........chris3;)

Exactly, it's still 80 here and everyone is wearing shorts

Business as usual.

Well since most of the answers have been from warmer parts of the country, and therefore not terribly pertinent, I'll chime in.

I live in parka land, and (so far) I run the same ammo winter and summer.

It seems one always has to make compromises, so it is a matter of doing the best you can, on the more important issues. I'm already compromising in caliber and capacity, being that I usually am only carrying a j-frame. Next to those issues I haven't felt too worried about the winter clothing question

But it is a good question. If I saw some compelling evidence I might be persuaded to change ammo in winter.

One option for me would be to carry .357 rounds in winter, and .38's in summer. Of course as previously mentioned, then you are making another compromise (going against the consistency of using just one type of ammo).

<Thinks back over 50 yrs he has been around>

I'm not boring, I'm just consistent and redundant. :D

Basically same platforms, calibers, ammo choices...

No changes. The only exception was when Federal still made the Nyclad ammo, which was my preference for the .38 snubbie. Back then, it was the Nyclad in warm/hot weather and 158grn +P LSWHP when it got cold. Now, due to more practice, a better set of grips, and the lack of Nyclads, the LSWHP goes in year round.

Well, since I carry only high quality, well designed JHP/BHP defensive ammunition I have no reason to change my ammunition just because the weather changes. All of my ammunition choices would suit my needs whether it's 115 degrees F in the shade, or there's 20 ft of snow outside.

Now, training for the expected weather conditions, and method of carry, just to name a couple of other things, may change a bit now and again when environmental conditions are taken into account ...

Winter? South Texas doesn't have a winter. What is "winter". Oh, yeah, that's when it's not 105 degrees with 90 percent humidity. That's when you can be comfortable in 80 degree weather in a T shirt. :p

The good part is, I ride motorcycles year round down here. Don't need no stinkin' snow mobiles or tire chains. And, while there was a greek letter tropical storm in the atlantic a few days ago... ...at least the 65 degree gulf water keeps the Katrinas at bay.

I never heard of law enforcement changing ammo with the seasons. I just carry my Gold Dots year round.

I go with "hotter" ammo during winter. I don't want to freezer burn my fingers while loading. ;)

Since Golden Saber always has reliable performance in my pistols it's what I stick with. Sometimes the place I buy it from runs out, and during the summer I'll use standard loads. During winter, +p gives me piece of mind.

Same load year-round; 180 grain gold sabres handloaded to develop 1340 FPS from 3.5" tube. Spare mag is stoked with 180 gr. TMJ's at the same velocity.

On lighter clothing days it is a bit difficult to conceal my Witness compact 10mm; on those days I carry a Taurus PT145 MP loaded with PMC starfire 230 grainers. On really warm days I carry my P3AT with 95 gr. SXT's.

The only thing I might change is the ammo in my 2" revolver. 158 gr. SWC for winter and 125 gr. Gold Dots for summer. I don't carry that gun much anyway, so it's not usually an issue.

I pretty much stick to some type of hollow point depending on which gun.

200gr Corbon +p's backed up by
230gr Hornady XTP +p in .45ACP
worse case they act like hot FMJ but still won't punch through boths sides of a computer case or car door.
10mm is too expensive (even as a reloader), I don't like the idea if reloading with the shoulder in the 357Sig so my next step will probably be standard cap 9mm

What he said, but change the Texas to Florida.
