S&W9VE is, I believe, the Sigma. They had a horrible reputation when they first came out. Since then they've, apparently, gotten a lot better.
S&W99 is a repackaged Walther P99. Reliable and ergonomic, but has a few quirks (like top-position decocker button, not an issue for most people, but bad juju for a cop, IMO).
Of the two, I'd go with the S&W99.
However, you owe it to yourself to try the M&P first. It is out in .40 right now, but 9mm and .357 Sig are next.

I have a SW99 - I rented one a while back and liked it a lot - ended up getting one soon after.
I love the SA/DA trigger - especially the SA - it is real nice for range use - It will need a few shots to smooth out the trigger, and then it works great.
Beware that S&W has stopped making the SW99 - they are making the SW990L now - it has a DA trigger which is heavier. I do not really like this version.
If U can get a SW99, go ahead and get one while U still can.
It is a clone of the Walther P99 - I also have a compact Walther. I love both of these guns.
I would definetly NOT recommend a Sigma - It has a horrible trigger, and most stories I hear about this gun are terrible.
Get the SW99. Great gun!

the SW99 is definately the superior pistol, if you don't mind the "americanized" slide...the german slide is more pyramid shaped.
the 99 trigger feels spongy but is really very slick when you get used to it. the trigger reset is world class. the ambidexerous mag release and interchangable backstrap is very handy.
the decocker is a little strange at first, but not really hard to adapt to. i usually decock with my support thumb (since my trigger finger is releasing the mag now), but i can also reached it by raising my strong thumb.

I have the S&W9VE. I read all the info on it that I could before purchasing. It does appear when they first developed the "sig" they had problems. I beleive that they were made in "steel" and "Stainless steel". Now I think that the latest generations are only avail in stainless. I have only put 100 rounds through mine but I was pleased with the grouping and did not have any failures. After I get about 500 or so out I will file a range report. So far the only thing that is a slight problem is the trigger pull. According to the specs it is 9 lbs.
If you click the site below it is an article on the new Sigma S&W
