after reading up here on this pistol, I traded in my Para Tac Four mainly because it gets HEAVY with 14 rounds of 230 gr ammo, and got a Scandium.

Amazingly light and comfortable to carry all day.

Very tight gun. Nonetheless, I ran a bunch of mixed types of ammo through it, 230 gr ball, 200 gr JHP, 185 gr truncated cone, and 230 gr JHP from Double Tap. All without a hiccup. It's easy to shoot this gun fast and accurately. Novak sights are nice. And no stupid integral lock.

Wow, cool! How much does it weigh unloaded? Weight is THE main factor in CCW for me carrying IWB. Bulge counts in summer, of course, but I can't handle a gun much over 25 ounces for all day carry. All steel 5" 1911s are just too much weight for most folks, even though they're nice and flat and thin.

I just purchased one of the 4 1/4" Smith's in the scandium--probably be a couple weeks before I get my hands on it though by the time it gets here and I get a chance to get all the paperwork and such taken care of :(

Yep, I selected a 5" SW1911Sc because I wanted a 1911 that was lightweight, but also a full-size model with a 5" barrel. Nice balance for me needs.

The Scandium's frame strength advantage over convential aluminum frames isn't a bad thing, either.

Now I have a full-size, high quality 1911-style pistol which weighs 29.5 ounces empty, compared to a compact 4513TSW, which weighs 28.6 ounces.

Or, to lokk at it another way, the 457S compact .45 pistol weighs 29 ounces.

My newly issued 4566TSW weighs 39.1 ounces, and a standard SW1911 stainless weighs 39 ounces.

The 4.25" barreled SW1911Sc only weighs an ounce less, at 28.5 ounces.

After all the figures are done being tossed about, my SW1911Sc 5" is a much easier pistol resting in the holster than my XSE Government, all things considered.

I also suspect the new SW1911SC with the black Scandium frame with the new integral frame rail, and the stainless Melonite treated (black) slide, are going to start attracting some folks, too ... for those folks that have that gun-light, tactical orientation, anyway.;)

i really like the feel of my SW1911Sc too...even with the "billboard" on the side of the slide. very balanced and very tight...this is what my colt commander should have been before i spent all that money on it :eek: (but that was back in 1984)

just out of curiousity, does anyone know if the Sc frame is anodiozed like aluminum or is it refinished some other way?

The technical specs list the black Scandium frames as being anodized and the 'stainless colored' ones being clear coated.

just one more question still O/T. does that mean that it it doesn't lose hardness if the finish is removed?

I don't know. I'd call and ask one of the engineers at S&W. Or, maybe one of the folks at the Performance Center.

Alloying aluminum with a very small amount of Scandium yields a much stronger alloy than ordinary aluminum, and machining the Scandium frames isn't as easily done as with the aircraft grade aluminum normally used for the lightweight metal frames ... according to what I've been told, anyway.
