This line caught my eye:
U.S. Marines used a pontoon bridge to cross the Diyala, a Tigris River tributary, for the first time and seize ground on the city's east side.
Col. B.P. McCoy told Reuters news agency that the bridge was secured after fighting that began Sunday.
"It was a good fight. We had our machine guns, mortars and artillery firing. We did it the old-fashioned way," he said, between drags on a cigar. "Once we get in among them, they are dead meat."
