Hello everyone, new to the forum
I have recently acquired a GLOCK 17 (9mm) and am looking for a cheap practice round.
Ive been using WWB for about $12 per 100. thinking of reloading being we will start reloading the 30.06 and .257 roberts but it probably wouldnt be worth it. I dont mind the work though.
Any suggestions?
also, what does parabullum mean as opposed to luger? I know they are the same, but why the differentiation

Welcome to THR! Nice to have you on board.
For cheap practice ammo, I tend to use CCI Blazer. Natchez Shooters Supply usually has these for less than $5 for a box of 50. Alternatively, the Winchester White Box ball ammo from Wal-Mart is usually not much more than $10 for a box of 100, and you don't have to pay shipping.
The word "Parabellum" comes from the ancient Latin tag "Si visi pacem, para bellum" - "if you would see peace, prepare for war". The last two words were run together and applied to the 9mm. Luger round, although I don't know who did it. They are, indeed, the same round.

Thanks for the reply.
I was buying the winchester at Wal-Mart. I was also looking at the rem UMC because of the trays.
Thanks, i guess nobody reloads 9mm for practice (im not doing any comp yet, but the IDPA looks very neat).

i reload 9mm for practice. i even reload it for my g17 :)
i got lucky and found a feller online who sold me jhp 115gr and 124 bullets for 2 dollars per hundred, plus actual shipping. i bought 3 or 4 k, i think 4 but i dont remember. either way it was a lot. using those bullets i reload jhp for 5 dollars per hundred, assuming i've recovered the costs from my press. I do 9mm on a progressive, but it can be done by hand, i did 45 acp that way till i got a shell plate and some other goodies i "needed". its really not that bad. if you reload for your 06 and 257 theres definatly savings to be had. i think there are plenty to be had in 9mm too, but some would argue with that. ebay has great deals on bullets, if you look you can get speers for under 50 bucks shipped if you buy 3k at a time for 9mm. primers, everyone will tell you, to get locally unless you buy in ubber bulk. in which case order your primers and powder together, because additional charges apply to them. assuming street prices and not getting deals you can reload 9mm for 7-7.50 per hundred if you use jacketed or plated bullets. i do because i have a stock barrel in my g17 and im afraid of an issue with straight lead. is that a substatiated fear? im not sure but im not risking my gun and my hand to find out :p i dont reload 30-06 but i do 270 and 22-250. huge savings can be had in those deparments. my 22-250 rounds run me about 10 dollars per hundred, and my 270 runs about 15 dollars per hundred. to me those savings are worth it.
the reloading forum here is excellent. glocktalks also is pretty good.
welcome!

If the gun is a defensive one... I recommend shooting the same bullet weight as your defensive ammo. If possible, the same brand. For example, if your using Winchester Ranger-T defensive ammo.. use Winchester FMJ in the same weight. Speer Gold Dots in 124gr? Use Speer Lawman TMJ 124gr for practice, etc.

Walmart for the WWB ammo.
Sports Authority, Bass Pro & Sportsman Warehouse periodically run sales on ammo. When Basspro marked Remington & UMC 9mm down to $4.49-4.99/box, I filled two big ammo boxes!
I reload .45acp, .38spl & .32S&W Long but passed up on 9mm because of the deals you can get when they go on sale. I also hoard my share of 7.62x39 for the same reason.
If you decide to reload 9mm, skip the single stage and go straight to a progressive machine.

skip the single stage and go straight to a progressive machine
If the first thing to reload is 30-06 or 257 Roberts, a single stage may be the way to go. But it still may not pay to load your own 9mm. You have to buy jacketed bullets, Glock claims lead is bad.

I reload for almost every caliber I shoot. For the defensive handguns, I load my own social ammo too, in the same weight and such as my practice rounds. The difference of POI between FMJ and JHP isn't big enough to consider...
and before y'all start hollerin': I know the conventional "wisdom" regarding use of handloads in a defensive gun. Since I have yet to hear of a court case where ammo selection was an issue, and I've never had a squib or dud with my loads, I'll just ignore the "conventional wisdom"...
