Personally, if someone thrust $600 into my hand and said "I want you buy a new gun, any new gun" - it would probably be a CZ 527 in something like .22 Hornet, or perhaps 7.62x39.

hmm $600 in my hands I would surf the net and do a lil shopping at dealers cost from some friends of mine and get maybe 4 or 5 old military sks's or a few saiga's I like quantity more than quality I buy cheap and repair broken guns and things like that. Ebay parts kits guns people played with and tried to mod and turned out wrong. The most expensive gun I have would be an fully tricked out sks with about $900 in it all together just to show off to some friends (and make a lil noise)

I think you need to resist the money burning a hole in your pocket until you get a clear idea of what you want a gun FOR. It might take long enough that you would be able to save up more money and get something nicer that would fill a real purpose.

Dunham's near me has a sale once in a great while, $100 off any Armalite Rifle. That brings the cost of a brand new AR-180b down to $600 plus tax

+1 for the CZ P-01
At a gun show, 600 will get you the gun, plus you'll still have cash left over for range ammo and a bottle of Tequila for the end of the night. :D
Or go the Sig route if you don't like the CZ (a lot of people don't like the lack of readily available CZ gear).

Great! No one beat me to it, here goes:
Get yourself a Rock Island Armory 1911 .45acp!
With the money you save over buying the other suggested pieces of firearms, get a progressive reloading machine...only way you can enjoy shooting a lot! Unless you just won the lottery...then I'll have to bill you for the advice!!! :)

i left out details on purpose, i was more curious as to what others would buy with the same amount.
there isn't anything i drastically need, but there's a few things i want, and a few things i'm considering.

Actually, I kind of liked the fact that the recommendations weren't all 1911. :neener:
A CZ75 is also a good recommendation.

Rather than buying a new gun, buy equipment that you don't have for the guns you already own,, Optics, nylon gear, bipods, carry cases, you get the idea.

$600 to spend on a gun... Geez...
Well here are the guns on my 06' list for under $600
Glock 20
Glock 30
Walther P99
Mosin Nagant 91/30
Yugo SKS
Used Beretta 92fs
Springfield 1903A3 (If it doesn't get sold before I can get my paws on it)
Slightly over $600
M1 Garand ($599, but it'll be over with tax)
Guns I already own for under $600
Walther P38 (You can still find 'em for about two and half bills with 2 mags and holster)
Browning High Power (bought mine used LNIB for $500 +tax, two mags)
Ruger No.1 (papaw gave it to me. 22-250. I can pick the letter to hit on a coke can at 150 yards, so the rifle itself has to be better than that.)
Marlin Model 60 (.22s are fun)
Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk.III (great granddad brought it back from Europe in 1918. It's since become a family heirloom).

grimjaw,
RE: cz 527 in 7.62x39;
Congratulations! I think it is a great idea; a handy little bolt-action in a light medium bore cartridge like the 7.62x39. Especially CZ's Mauser type action.
Let us know how it shoots!

how about geting a new ar15 upper. i was thinking of geting a 9mm upper, but it would seriously make me feel like i wasted money on the beretta carbine i bought a couple months ago. ...in fact i already feel like that, im really wanting a 9mm ar15... :)

If you go to a car dealer and tell him you want to spend $30,000 on a car, you get a $30,000 car. With anything I buy, I like value. I want to get the most for my money. With $600, you can get two guns or one gun and a lot of ammo. My favorite value brands are Taraus and Ruger, but my Rock Island Armory .45 is growing on me. If I were just starting out, I would get the Rock Island AND an SKS. That way, you have a capable handgun and a capable rifle. If you already own guns, look for something that fills a gap in your collection.
