I saw on the TV a couple of weeks ago that the US troops were allowing the Afgan's to keep their personal weapons,AK-47s for the most part. I heard today that the Iraqi people were raiding the amories of the former regimen and arming theirselves. Will they be allowed to keep personal weapons? Might prevent another Saddam from coming to power.

Would definitely prevent another tyrant from coming to power. Now, if only we had a voluntary government program, whereby people are encouraged to go to their nearest US Army/Marine rifle range, and go through the same rifle qualification as the Army/Marines do. Give it an incentive. People who do this get to deduct from their taxes, the costs they incur to do 'Citizen Militia' duty.
"Honey, I'm off for Citizen Militia duty. I have to try out my brand new selective-fire M16A3." :D
Think of the economies of scale the US Govt would enjoy if all of a sudden everyone were to buy the same main battle rifle as the standing army uses. The pace of improvements and innovation would quicken as well.

Why wouldn't they be allowed to keep them? Any policy on firearms ownership there will be up to the new government.

Will they be allowed to keep personal weapons? Not a chance in hell. As soon as the interm government gets set up, I gar-en-tee you that we'll see at least a ban on transporting weapons in public, probably an outright posession ban.
I saw on the TV a couple of weeks ago that the US troops were allowing the Afgan's to keep their personal weapons,AK-47s for the most part. If this is true, it's only because there aren't enough US troops in Afghanistan to go door to door. US policy in occupied states has generally included disarmament of civillians (Somalia is the first example that springs to mind.)
Might prevent another Saddam from coming to power. Might. It also might prevent the USG from setting up a military government in Iraq.
We'll see how it goes.

There are so many AK in Iraq that it will take years to find them all.
Plus if i was in Iraq i would keep mine because i don't think PEACE will last long after the US leaves. To many people want's the oil.:banghead:

Sadly, I don't think there's a chance in hell they'll be given the equivalent of a 2nd amendment or RKBA. Certainly there will be immediate restrictions on carriage and CCW etc. in public.
IF the UN is involved in any post-war reconstruction (and I believe they will be), I'd put money on there being a TOTAL ban on the private possession of firearms -- period.
Of course, seeing those firearms they own now aren't registered and the owners are not licensed, I'll also bet there'll be a booming market in plastic pipe and endcaps, as well as grease and oilcloth!
