I decided to replace the original cheap stamped sight on my Rossi '92 lever action and picked a Marbles Semi-Buckhorn.

Of course it came with no instructions and neither the Rossi nor Marbles web site have any information on installation.

Before I start hammering on things, ...

From observation it looks pretty much like you use a bronze drift to tap the old sight out of the dovetail and tap the new one in and adjust from side to side as needed after a couple of range sessions to achieve a zero.

Am I missing anything here? Is there some other preparation, gunsmithing type work or details I'm missing before I do something stupid and expensive?

I don't have experience with your gun and sight, but you will be lucky if it's just a tap out-tap in. Expect to do a bit of fitting with a file. File the sight, not the barrel so a mistake won't be such a bad experience.

My marbles full buckhorn jus drifted right in with a plastic punch. I put tape over the barrel, under the old sight where it sat so that it didn't mar the barrel when drifting it out or the new one in. This was on a Winchester, but it's all the same.
