How do I get rid of fingerprints?

i know this might sound suspect, but im actually not trying to "get rid" or prints so to speak. i receantly bought my first handgun (.45 "Baby Eagle"), its black steel, and i was wondering what you guys use to keep it looking clean and not all oily and hand/fingerprinted up? i guess if i would have sprung for the polished chrome i wouldnt have this issue, but that one is $200 extra, heheh.

any recomendations?

Laz, sounds like you have too much oil on it. Take a piece of old T-shirt for a wiping rag, spray a little Rem-oil, Breakfree, or I prefer G96, on it and use that for a wiping rag. You can buy them already impregnated with stuff if you prefer. Spray it very lightly; you don't want a noticable residue left on your gun. Keep the rag in a zip-loc and it will be good for a long time before needing more spray. Been doing this for many years.

ok, thanks alot.
so is it "gun oil"? your not talking about wiping it down with lube are you? im kinda new to this stuff. im guessing it is differant, correct? (i have some lube and some #9 powder solvent, none of this stuff is what your talking about, right? i've only been a gun owner for about 4 days, hehe)

(i think i might have anserwed my own question)

Now you tell me. My Glock has turned into a black puddle with a funny white cloud hanging over it. Just a second, I am going to run over there and get a good sniff of the cloud. I will write back and tell you what it smells like.

A CLP soaked rag is good for wipe down, as is a thin film of ''RIG''. Another option is Boeshield which has an effect similar to using car wax.

Main thing is that no acid skin salts get trapped so a thoro external clean is good followed by the protective film.

My Smith blued revo's need this type of approach and it works well. Thin oil will also help but not be as persistent over time.

RIG #2 oil and a cotton cloth is the best I've ever used to prevent fingerprints.

Good Luck...

When ever fingerprints are a "problem" use sport gloves; you know, for baseball or biking, they are thin enough for a good grip, doesn't affect accuracy, etc. After you are finished with the execution, burn the gloves, don't take a chance on just throwing them out. Murder is a dangerous business, are you getting paid or is this one personal?

Buy a gun wipe rag at a gun, or sporting good store. They usually do a decent job of cleaning, rustproofing, and gettiing rid of handling marks. Some of the others statements above work well but I have found the rag handy. You can also make your own by using a good gun lub spray on a cotton rag then seal in a zip lock.

If you are one of those people who feel like you haven't done enough if it doesn't cost a bunch, try Sweetshooter (www.sweetshooter.com (http://www.sweetshooter.com)).

Amazing stuff at keeping fingerprints at bay, but expensive.

Personally, I just use the silicone gun cloths on most of my guns.

I think a little scotch tape around the finger tips would be a lot less painful. :barf:

Superglue on the fingertips will fill in the whorls and leave a flat spot.

On a serious note, wiping LIGHTLY with a clean cloth with a SMALL amount of oil is all that's needed post-cleaning. That's my last step before storing and I'm careful to grab only the stock/grips on the way to the safe or nightstand.

I have a Baby Eagle as well (4.75" in .40) and after I have cleaned it (as with all my guns) I wipe it with a silicone cloth. These are easy to find in most gun stores. They come in a plastic bag and I cut the top of the bag so I can remove the cloth and still fold it and put it back in the bag (It will keep a lot longer that way). When I am done cleaning I hold the gun with a clean(ish) rag and wipe all the metal surfaces. Don't touch the gun with your skin, and put it away.

The Baby Eagle has a finish that is allready semi resitant to fingerprints (more than blued steel) and a silicone cloth will keep it protected for a long time.

Also, If its fingerprints on your hands that you're worried about...I remember an old episode of Hawaii Five-0 where the perp had no fingerprints because he worked in a pineapple cannery. :D

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably go with the silicone rag (opposed to the sandpaper/acid).:)

have the wife put a big heavy pan in the oven and let it get nice nad hot and then take it out and leave it on the counter, yes i should have known it was hot, yes i should have felt the heat of it, but i did not not and now i have no finger prints on my right hand.

pulling 300 yards of siene net up the beach will do it too, the sand and the nylon acts like a giant scrubby spnonge to sand them off.

I used to mold and cut expanded polystyrene insulation. That will abrade your fingers flat in a matter of days.

Kinda makes the Mounties look twice when they ask you your occupation (driving home through Canadia), you reply "factory worker", they ask to see your hands and said hands are pinker and smoother than a baby's bottom. :uhoh:

Skip the use of oils etc on the exterior and use Rennaissance Wax instead. Fingers don't print on it.

Or use Tetra Gun Grease. Very lightly coat all exterior metal with the grease, wipe down, then buff dry with clean dry cloth. Wipe down lightly with a clean rag or paper towel after handling.

Presto! No fingerprints.

1. Armadillo coat by Blue Wonder (kind of like a wax)
2. Eezox CLP, very fingerprint resistant, awesome corrosion resistance, smells great. Not all that easy to find but worth the effort (hint: check eBay, and buy enough to defray the shipping)...

I simply wipe my guns down with a plain old clean cloth rag after handling, and it's worked fine for 10 years- no prints, no rust.

(this is just for handling, not cleaning after shooting)

convicted him based on other evidence (eye witness type)~!:uhoh: :D
