Can anyone tell me if you need an adapter to use the harris bipod on this stock? Also, does anyone have any opinions on the quality of this stock? I am trying to decide on which stock and am looking at this stock for a savage 10FP as the original stock is flimsy. Thanks! :)

I tried to suggest these last time this topic was discussed at length, but the site was always down..

The TechniCarbon Dynamics stocks from Kurts Kustom Firearms (http://www.kurtskustomfirearms.citymax.com/catalog/item/29585/1133.htm) looks mighty sweet. If I were buying a replacement stock for my Savage, these would get first consideration. (But they're almost 2x the price... :( $299)

the Choate comes with an adapter, but i got a Harris #6 adapter yesterday. the Choate adapter holds the bipod off of the forend, and is quite long, it also wasn't too stable. i then removed one of the sling swivels from the 10FP stock and used it on the forend, but it needs spacers. the #6 is small and shorter so the bipod will contact the forend.http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=169425

What scope is that on your rifle? In the picture are you using the harris adapter? Does the stock seem a lot more rigid?

the scope was a Simmons 4-16x40AO, Leupold base and med rings. i now have a 6-24x42 Sightron on it. that's a old pic with the Choate bipod adapter. the Choate stock is alot stiffer than the factory stock.

Did you torque yours down to 65 inch pounds? The choate website says 50 inch pounds. What do you think?

actually still messing with it, so haven't broke out the torque wrench yet :) and still have to remove the old swivel so that i put in.

Did you have to drill the rail hole out for the old sling stud to fit? When you say it needs spacers do you mean the washer or are you referring to spacers between the pod and stock forend? Do you think it is just best to get the #6 adapter?

no drilling, just removed one of the bolts holding the rail in. it looks like if you remove the 3 bolts holding the rail in, you may not need a spacer for the new sling swivel. haven't put the Harris #6 on yet, but think it would be the best so that you could place the bipod where you want it on the rail.

Just curious as to why you'd torque the Choate stock to the H-S Precision specs??

Brownell's carries both the Ultimate Varmint and the Ultimate Sniper for the same price...$135. I believe you'll find the Ultimate Varmint to be far superior to the Ultimate Sniper. (Check out the foreend angles)

Prof: You have to establlish a "trade discount" account with Brownell's in order to get the $135 price. You don't have to have an FFL, and you dont' have to submit any business licenses, etc. What you have to do is answer "yes" to the online question reqarding being in a business that doesn't require an FFL.

Those stocks were $106 until fairly recently.

why would you say that? what is wrong with the foreend angle?? the very front of it is angled on purpose and has a rail that slides on it that you can attach a bipod to and make small adjustments in height by moving the rail. the part where you would grip it on the fore end is flat not angled....

just wondering why you would say that, I am happy with mine :)

now if you were planning on varmit hunting, or any hunting for that matter, or even wanted to stand up and shoot it, I could see the varmit one being a better choice (even if it is just because it is lighter). I don't though....

I prefer the wide foreend of the Varmint model. All I'd be doing would be varmint hunting or target shooting. I really don't see too many real "snipers" around these parts. ;)

I'd much prefer the H-S Precision stocks for the shooting that I do, but they're a little more expensive than the Choate stocks.

I went with the ultimate varmint rifle stock. Here is a pic. I also got the harris #6 adapter (not shown) which makes a huge difference on the stability.

What's the additional hardware on the front of the sniper version? Is there some kind of adjustment?

May check out Sharp Shooter Supply, as they specialize in Savages. They have some great stocks, although a bit more expensive than most Choates. Their varmint stocks are awesome, and I plan on purchasing another Super VarTac stock for my 12FV soon. However, SSS's stocks are of a more traditional styling than the Choates.

The only other stock I would go with for this type of stock would be HS Precision or McMillian, although I have had good luck with B&C stocks for hunting rifles.

Save up and get a real stock. The Choates are clunky and weigh a ton. Agree with bgold: McMillan or something offered by Sharp Shooter Supply.
