The Ruger Redhawks have a grip that curves up from the base of the handle and "dips" just before it contacts the frame. This dip creates a space in the palm of my hand that is compresses when firing. I has the effect of smacking my hand on every shot. If I grip the revolver lower, this doesn't happen, but followup shots are slower.

Am I gripping the gun improperly, or should I get a stock without the dip in it? Who makes them? None of Hogue's wood grips offer what I'm looking for.

It sounds like you're not gripping properly to me.

Ack, I tried to describe how to get a good grip...(or at least how I was tough)..and describing it..isn't easy.

I have a 5 1/2" Ruger Redhawk and have the exact same problem when shooting .44 magnums. The only way I could resolve it was to put a set of Pachmayr Presentation grips on it. These are rubber grips and although they don't look as nice as the wood ones they work very well and alleviate that smacking of your hand. It doesn't sound as if you are gripping the gun improperly I just think its an inherent problem with the design.

Why Ruger doesn't make the same factory grips for the Redhawk as they do for the GP100 and the Super REdhawk is beyond me. Ruger factory grips for those revolvers are great.

Personally, I just can't see how anyone can comfortably shoot factory Redhawk grips. They feel like a broom handle to me.

I first tried the Pachmayr Presentations, Packmayr finger grooves, and rubber Hogue finger grooves. I stopped looking when I screwed on these Hogue woodies. They're big grips, but I've got big paws. The Presentations were pretty nice., but didn't care much at all for the Packmayr rubber finger grooves. The rubber Hogue finger grooves were also nice, just a bit too thin. Seems like every Hogue grip I've ever seen fit on the gun just perfectly.

The grips feel fine to me until the gun goes off. Then the saw-handle at the top of the grip impacts the web of my hand. Pachmeyers are plenty comfortable even with reall heavy loads.

Totally agree. I ended up putting the Hogue rubber grips on my 5 1/2" Redhawk. They worked well for me. I wouldn't recommend these if you have small hands though.

I use Pachmayr Decelerator stocks on all my Rugers (two GP's and four Redhawks).

They allow me a modicum of comfort when launching 'big heavy stupid fasts' and give me an excellent high-n-tight either-hand grip for fast-n-dirty DA IPSC-ing.

Just me; your results may vary.

Pachmayr Presentation grips are my choice too. I shoot heavy 310s comfortably till it rubs a blister.

I have always had probs with std grips on this and BH's ..... my old Redhawk ..... I carved some grips for .. helped a lot (no pic handy). Currently ...... my Super BH .... I found a pair of used grips at gun shop and tried them ... see pic below ..... suit me great .. I have bigggish paws and these fill the hand beautifully ... altogether more comfortable with my hottish loads. No idea what make!!!

The single-action grip-style (like the one shown above on the Blackhawk) is much more comfortable. Some people say that the Redhawk's design is better because it allows the gun to roll on your hand and doesn't beat you up as much. That's probably true for some people, but I don't find the recoil that punishing, but I do find the muzzle-flip frustrating.

Maybe I need to rewatch my Miculek video. He has quick followups on his 357 and his custom grips aren't terribly different from the Redhawk's.
