On the calendar.

I was there last weekend and Len said there was non-falling steel on bay 1 now, no extra fee for that.
I saw 3 or 4 10" plates.

I'm planning to be there.

And a bump.

Bought my 10 year old a P22 and some extra mags; he wants to try a little more than single shots at a tin can.

I'll have him with me but he probably won't shoot with others around. We may have to go to an isolated bay for a while.

We're a very intimidating bunch...:D

TexasRifleman
January 22, 2006, 10:46 PM
He worries that he's not tactical enough, although the holster for the P22 is Kydex so that should help

can I tag along?

Where is TDSA?

TechBrute

Everyone is welcome, we just ask that we get a firm RSVP for guests. TDSA is located down 45, a few miles south of 20. If you want to come, I'll dig up the more detailed directions.

At least that was less than 50 miles from my house (just barely)...

You mean the worst range Nazi on planet Earth? That Gibsons?

The Gibsons where I took my 11.5" AR out of the case and he was ready to call the cops because "you can't own something like that in Texas".

Or the Gibsons that told me I couldn't shoot my BAR because "We don't 'llow no fifty cal here"

That Gibsons?

That's why no Gibsons. We all had a bad experience of one kind or another.

He made it real clear to us that he likes guys that want to sight in their deer rifles with a few rounds and leave, nothing more.

Over a couple visits, they had hacked off most of the people in our group for one thing or another. Either attitude at the front desk or problems on the line.

TexasRifleman
January 27, 2006, 02:40 PM
Another shameless bump.

Do we have an OK member/guest ratio so far TechBrute?

TechBrute
January 27, 2006, 02:45 PM
It's fine. I'm going to call Len tomorrow and let him know we'll be out there.

Man, that sounds like fun. When do you need to assemble the guest list (got to ask the wifey.) What's the admission price?

TechBrute
January 27, 2006, 03:23 PM
As long as I have a decent count by tomorrow, it should be ok.

Admission... hmmm... I think 100 rounds of Q3131, XM193, 9mm, or .45 should do it. :D

Just kidding. No admission cost.

Ok, one last bump.

Tomorrow's forecast is sunny and 54 at 10AM tomorrow, sunny and 65 at noon, and a high of 71 later in the afternoon.

It looks like no more rain for us, and I'm going to assume that it will be plenty dry by then.

Bringing:
K-31s
BAR
Browning auto 22
Delta with .40 barrel just to see if it's reliable.

Kid is bringing his:
Walther P22
Chipmunk

We're bringing food and planning on staying past lunchtime.

Wife say's, "Baby formula beats .357 mag ammo, so no! You can't go."

Hope we cross paths in the future.

THAT is why I just smile when people say "You shoot a .22? Hah hah....."

Maybe some day. We try to do these monthly if the weather holds up.....

CLP is like baby Formula. :D

I don't know how long I can stay. I'll be getting in around 2 am and have to repack for another trip on Monday. It'll probably just be a couple hours for me. :(
All I'm bringing is a Glock 22 that I've been working on and 1 45.

My one visit there was characterised by a fairly unpleasant older lady at the desk. Yes, I could see how you could maybe make some of the responses--I did not experience them but I'll take your word for it. As I say, one visit, and it's a ways down the road, so no great loss.

But...this other place is much farther. Any hope I have of meeting felow THR'ers diminishes proportional to the distance travelled. If you are riflemen, the maybe Elm Fork or Backwoods Traps? If you are pistoleros, how about Bass Pro in Grapevine or DFW Gun Range off Mockingbird?

BTW, anyone make it to the Denton Gun Show today? Not a bad place to spend a rainy Saturday morning, but probably more crowded than any Gun Show in recent memory...

Load your .357 rounds with Baby Formula.

Some punk pulls a gun on you, you can take him out with six rounds of creamed corn! :D

So, out of curiosity, does anybody ever do any get-togethers closer to College Station?

How's about a get together on a day OTHER than Sunday? Hmmm???

Talk about pagan.:uhoh:

Oh...and Techbrute...I broke down and bought a 1911. A Kimber. The shame of it all. Oh yeah, I'm getting an AR too....but don't worry, it's gonna be one you DON'T like....cause I'm cheap.

BTW...are shotguns allowed at your range or are MAN weapons feared?

Gibson's...well, all righty then!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My one visit there was characterised by a fairly unpleasant older lady at the desk. Yes, I could see how you could maybe make some of the responses--I did not experience them but I'll take your word for it. As I say, one visit, and it's a ways down the road, so no great loss.

I've found that same woman also highly unpleasant. After my year membership was up I never looked back. I am now going to the Garland Range. Unlike Gibson's they have a shotgun/clay throwing area. Also unlike Gibson's they have been very accomodating. Membership is lifetime too (as I understand it.)

So buy some .38spl and you can still afford the formula

It's really not all that much cheaper. I need to reload or buy a 9mm (or both). Plus; I really like the bigger boom of the mag. I have a 22lr and love it, but I like to mix things up with a little bigger sectional diameter.

Really, the baby is on the way and things are tight. No formula needed right now, but as a consultant I only get paid when I work. January is always slow. Next month's schedule looks better and I might have a new toy to bring along.

TechBrute

The reason we really like to congregate at TDSA, regardless of the distance is because:

1) No range nazis. Heck, most of the time there's not even range personnel on hand. You want to work hoster, work holster.
2) No stupid rules on hardware. Class 3, shotguns, and any other legal firearms are allowed. The range owner will qualify you on the rifle range and with class 3, but it's purely administrative.
3) No stupid rules just to be PC. Shooting at pictures of Osama is not only allowed, but possibly encouraged.
4) Low cost. At $150 a year with no visit fee, it's cheaper than most other ranges around. This allows more ammo purchases.
5) See number 1 and 2 again.

With other ranges, you have to cherry pick them based on what you want to shoot.

1) Gibsons has bad attitude and will hassle you about SBRs and BARs.
2) Elm Fork is anti everything except hunting rifles.
3) Indoor ranges aren't great for rifles.
4) There are nearly no ranges that allow you to just shoot shotgun.
5) Alpine sucks. I'll spare you another rant on them.

I had fun today, despite the mud. It was good to meet some new faces as well as seeing the regs.
With better weather coming, we should do this more often.

TexasRifleman
January 29, 2006, 07:47 PM
A bit sloppy early on yes.

I did learn an interesting by product of mud. When your shoes are caked with it and you walk over your brass, the empties follows you home on your shoes......

Nice to meet the new folks, hope we can continue to have turnouts like this.

Very nice day.

Between my 10 year old and myself we went through close to 600 rounds of .22, '06, 7.5 Swiss, 10mm and 5.56.....

Time for him to learn to use the Dillon...... :D

if I didn't have to drive 150 miles round trip.

And I'd have to do it twice per month to make it a break-even...
if gas were free, and my time were worth nothing.

Haven't actually shot at Elm Fork, but the one day we stopped by at lunch time, there was a USMC dude on leave from Iraq, firing an AR-15. No-one there had an attitude about that...as a matter of fact the RO was hanging out with him, and me (USN retired) and my bud (former US Army) went over and shot the breeze with both of them for a while. Just one day, one snapshot in time, but that was my experience.
