I am looking to buy a semi auto sten that someone build. What need to be done for that person to legally sell it to me? I belive that he need to put his name and address on the receiver and a serial #. Any help would be good or point me in the right direction.. Thanks

I am not well up on this but all I seem to recall is - if you made it, you can't sell it!!

Might be quite wrong tho - often am ;)

As far as the ATF is concerned, it can be sold as long as it was not manufactured *for the purpose* of selling. The details are covered by their FAQs.

As for state, YMMV.

Yes, it CAN be sold per the ATF. You must STAMP (no ingraving) a serial # and your name and address on it. Basically you have to supply all the info that any other manufacturer has to supply. IF there's suddenly a flood of guns with your info on them (NOT saying YOU'LL do this) you WILL be getting a visit and a one-way ticket to Club Fed. You're fine if you're wanting to sell one or two but don't set up an assembly line! Again, this is per ATF supplied info. Your state may have something else to say about it.

With a sten, it must be constructed to fire from a closed bolt. An open bolt semi-auto is in the 'easily converted to full auto' category according to ATF--legally the same as a machine gun.

Be sure your acquaintance hasn't inadvertantly manufactured a machine gun before you buy!

Of course, who is to say that you didnt manufacture it? Needlessly involving the government in your life never leads to happyness.

I have always thought it would be neat to make a 1911 from scratch. Maybe I should do it.
