Colt Python Flamethrower.....

OK guys, I know you're not fond of tearing up factory Pythons.
But, I had to do it.
This is my latest Creation. I call it the Flamethrower.
Stainless Python with a Ported 6 inch tube, Patridge front sight, Elliason rear sight from a Gold Cup National Match.
Completely refinished with polished Flame graphics down the length of the barrel on both sides and then a Polished ring around the cylinder. Top it off with some vintage 2 piece badger fingergrooves and Whallah... Das Flamethrower !!!

While I love my Blued Python and cannot even fathom modifying it in any way, I can appreciate the work that went into the FlameThrower.
I'll bet the action is really slick with that polished ring on the cylinder too.

Here's another "flamethrower" python like yours, but apparently it backfired, or something.

dude thats a little rude to tell a guy that has worked hard on a project. i'm not a fan of laminated grips either but he gets on here to show something that he has made and you cut it down. i laughed when i saw your post, but thought it was in bad taste.:neener:

Sorry. The gun really is awesome. Really. GUNKWAZY, you got me thinking about what I can do to a few safe queens that I have. But tell me, how cool would that thing look with solid dark hardwood or carbon fiber grips?
The first gun I bought my daughter (when she was 6) was a bolt action .22 that had a stock that looked like those grips. Her first question was, "When can I get a real gun".

January 23, 2006, 01:12 AM
i'd put a nice pair of pacmyhr grips on, but everyone has different tastes, im kinda old school. i dont like carbon fiber stocks on rifles, i like walnut. i think the guy did a really sweet job on this one. dude you should sent those pics to guns and ammo......

Absolutely, just change out the stocks. How did you get that "twinkle" off the end of the barrel in the 2nd pick down? That's some bitchin lighting. Nice pics.

Sorry about the Orange look to the grips, for some reason my camera is picking it up as Orange. they are actually Brown, Gray & Green.
It could be the filter I'm using ?:banghead:

P.S. Thanks for most of the great comments guys.
As far as EddieCoyle's Toys-R-Us My little pony comments, maybe he'll take his balls out of his wife's purse some day and do something creative himself. We then can then judge him on his craftsmanship and camera work.
That is if he's willing to post a pic.

GUNKWAZY: Thanks for your post, but a few questions for you if you don't mind...
-Why port barrel of Python? Reasoning?
-Front patridge site looks less useful than standard...
-Can't understand change of rear Colt sight to 1911 site?
-Why polished cylinder ring?
-Grips are your own choice but these look a bit garrish IMO...
No doubt you worked hard on this weapon and it certainly looks different but I question functionality, especially extreme porting, which I fail to see need for (I've shot Pythons a lot) and I wonder if extreme porting of barrel would make gas discharge excessive and, after heavy shooting, would counter-act Colt standard vent rib action... just curious...

The gun actually shoots very well as Ported. I'm not sure if I'll port any more of my Pythons or not. The gun is a 357 magnum and designed for that. Most people with them only shoot 38's through them, because they don't want to hurt them. that's their preference.
The front Patridge sight is much easier to focus on as is the Ellaison rear sight. Instead of the original stepped rear factory equipped sight, the Elliason is one fat blade across the entire rear face. There's nothing to distract the focus of the eyes.
It's actually quite a nice sight package and the Colt Custom shop offered it as an option on the Python at an additional expense through the years.
I found it personally easy to see on my 1911 45's and thought it would work well on the Python, and it is a clear and precise sight picture.
Polish of the cylinder ring is just to take your eyes away from the normal thin dull drag line that the python naturally has after the cylinder has rotated.
The Garrish grips are a simple bolt on item that can be changed easily for your own tastes. These vintage laminated badger grips have a wonderful feel to them and everyone that has picked this Python up has always commented on how nice they feel. So far it's a split feel as to the look of the grips.
Some love them and some don't care for them. So far it's about 70% to 30% in favor of liking the look.
I personally own more grips then guns and feel if you are going custom on the gun, you can't go stock on the grips.
It's just like a custom set of wheels on a custom car or street rod.
If everyone liked only one kind, they would only then make only one type of wheel.
Hope this makes sense.
I plan on doing more custom stuff as there's lot's more ideas inside my tiny little brain.
Some will be loved and some will be disliked.
They hard a hard time selling Shelby Cobras when they were intruduced back in the 60's. Now if you watched any of Barrett Jackson this weekend, I think anything with the name Shelby on it touched the 6 figure mark.
Oh well. If anyone is local to Arizona and wants to see it, feel free to drop me an Email.

Any danger in the bullet jumping that large gap? No chance of it striking the edge as the barrel rises in recoil taking the bore out of alignment with the moving bullet?

That's a nice job. Has the comp increased the report? The guy next to you will know you touched it off, I'll bet!
The sights look like off my Series 80 Gold Cup National Match. Very cool. I think I know how you put the flame job and accents on, also very nicely done! :)

Hello, Jeff!
I think my question got overlooked in the general uproar. Did you open up the bore ahead of the ports, or is it still rifled?
Since you didn't ask for it, here's my personal opinion: I think Badger plywood stocks are tremendously UGHly, but I've got a set on my back pocket .357 because they fit my hand so well. Function sometimes beats form.

I'm catching up with you, Jeff!
I just bought an eight-inch stainless Python this afternoon. I felt badly taking it out of the Taxachussets market, but it's one I've been looking for awhile, and the price was acceptable: not good, but bearable. It'll go to http://www.magnaport.com for porting, bead blasting, et cetera. Pictures in awhile.

When I first shot with Nashville Matchmasters gun clubone member, Mr. Murph, shot a .357 Python. He would lay it on the table and grin...then he'd ask if we were ready for a little "flame throwin' ". He's gone now but I'm sure your gun would crack a big grin on his face! Thats a cool gun and good work. Thanks for the memories.
Mark.
ps...I just shot with the club...was not compettive. They shot circles around me.

GUNKWAZY, that Python is a work of art, I am a Python purist, but I would not be ashamed to say that I paid to have work like that done.
For me, I'd have no porting and some Ahrends grips or something similar, but damn... gave me a helluva woody! :what:

OK, after further review, I've checked the barrel end and the end has been reamed over size. So that there's no chance of bullet bounce.
As far as the polishing process goes, I don't know as I hired a local gunsmith to do it for me. I've recently seen some of his work and was all googly eyed.
I asked him if he could do some stuff for me and I'm very happy with the end result.
At a very reasonable price I might add.
I've already had a couple requests to have one done.
He has an FFL, so shipping directly to him is not a problem.
He also does many many other custom things. Not just wheelguns either.
Jewling, trigger jobs, Action jobs, Competition stuff.

Interesting gun project.
I like the sights, the grips*, and, surprisingly, the polished "flames" on the barrel. The porting looks a bit awkward to my eyes, and I'd probably have foregone the ring on the cylinder if it were my gun. But that's aesthetics for you.
* What I really like is dark green laminated wood grips on stainless revolvers. Wish they were more common. Check out the Freedom Arms "evergreen" grip sometime -- it's standard on their .22 "Varmint" revolver and optional on others. Lovely.

Just plain & simple. Nothing to focus on other than the notch.

That is a very nice job. It is nice to see some custom work job's rather than the typical dullish stock peices like the ones I post. the work on the drag line of the cylinder is particulary clever.
