Worth of Port/Hirtenberger .308?

Was at the Wilmington,Ohio PRO gun show today doing a little recon work. Two different vendors had one 200-round battle pack each of Port/Hert on their tables. Price was fifty bucks each. Is this ammo that much better than the SA that AIM sells for 154.00 per 980? If it is, I was thinking of putting some in stock for long-term storage and blasting with the SA if that is the case. Any thoughts, opinions,or mad rants?
Other recon results:limited amounts of Wolf 7.62x39 at 3.99 a box.One guy had a case of Win Q3131 at 209.00.Most others were more expensive than AIM.

IMHO $0.25/round is a little steep for 7.62 NATO.
Id get the Hirt, it shoots VERY well in my M-1A (1.5MOA). Port is available right now linked for less than $0.20/round, nobody has Hirt.

Can't speak for the Hirt, but I can tell you that the Port can be picked up with a magnet. The Hirt is probably worth the asking price, by reputation alone.

Port was considered to be some of the best surplus available when it was more common. There was a lot of wailing among the surplus shooters when it started to dry up. Even with the lower supply these days, a quarter a round seems a bit high--you can probably do as well as 15 to 17 cents a round in bulk with some shopping.
Hirtenberger is another one of the premium surplus ammo makers.

I've got over a thousand rounds of Hirtenberger, and it stays locked in my ammo cabinet, thank you very much! :D It's probably the best 7.62x51mm. milsurp ammo on the market, and is well worth stocking up if you can find it. I keep it for training courses, etc. where accuracy is important, and burn up Australian and South African surplus for general plinking.

Bwana, before I'd pay $.25 a shot for surplus, I would handload match ammo. That is, if you load your own.

So you like Hirtenberger better than Austalian ? I never had any Hirtenberger, but if it is that good I guess I have to find some. I bought 3-4 cases of Austrailian and tucked it away and kicked myself for not buying more: I thought that was some very nice stuff.

Hirt is the Holy Grail of mil-surp IMO. Boxer and it shoots VERY sweet out of my bolt rifle.
As Preacherman does, so do I keep a large amount locked up.
The Aussie Defence stuff wouln't group near as well. And its berdan.
I have about 500 pcs of Hirt brass that I have socked away, as well as another 250 loaded with 147 gr pulls and a charge of BLC2...sweet shooting stuff that is. :)

One other nice point about the linked Port. According to what I've heard, it's boxer primed... I haven't checked to verify that, but that's the rumor.
I agree with everyone on the Hirt--from what I've heard it's the best of the surplus.

Now that it's scarce, and since I was too stoopid to hoard some back in the day, I'd probably pay that much for Hirt if I saw it.
It shoots MOA or better in my Century FAL.

One of Hirt's main benefits is that it is reloadable. And it produces very good results. The Hirt brass that I have reloaded has been very accurate. Note that it's thicker than some commercial brass, and may require some downloading if you like to load near max.
But it's great reloading brass.

Hmm... socked away about 250 rounds of Hirt several years ago. Maybe it's time for a sale... :D
Also stuck aside some Radway Green (British) and some PMP (South African).

I have about 400 rounds of Hirt. I paid $35/200 rounds about 4 years ago.
It's kind of hard to find nowadays, and it's boxer primed. Both of these qualities make Hirt a valuable commodity, so I just keep it in storage.
But to be honest, I don't think Hirt shoots any better than Port, SA, or Australian.
