dumb and dumber about fal's

I recently purchased a parts fal kit from a mail order house, sight unseen, have not got the kit in my hands yet! I'm needing some direction now. I don't know what i'v purchased.
The kit is supposed to be GERMAN w/wooden furniture, metric. I'm told that the Germans had these rifles built in Austria, is this true? havn't asked that ? at the fal files yet. (guess i need to reg.huh!)
Then there is the almighty problem with finding a reciever. I know where i can buy a DSA, but where can i buy an IMBEL, or DCI or there may be other manufactures/suppliers out there that some one may know about?.
Would like to have some input on a CAI, reciever that Military Arms sells?
Just trying to get my ducks in a row. Thx olinbear

FALfiles is the place to read/ask about FALs and where I got all my 'larnen'.
Try to avoid any but the newest CAI receivers as the older ones were supposed to be a mixed bag. You can get lucky or very unlucky with them. A buddy of mine got very lucky with a recent CAI purchase. DSA receivers are pricey and they buy them from U.S. receiver makers anyway. Enterprise, Imbel, Dan Coonan, etc. all make receivers that work.
The german G1 (german FAL) is a perfectly good weapon. I don't think it was built in Austria considering that the folks at FN in Belgium wouldn't liscence the germans to build the FAL and they went to the G3 in response. If they could have gotten it from the Austrians they probably would have continuted to use it. You want to take a close look at the inside of the barrel on any kit and you want to check muzzel and throat wear before investing in the build (unless the accuracy isn't a terribly important issue and you just want the gun for blasting). If you want historical accuracy try to build on a type 1 receiver.
If you want input on something on the net you should include the link so that people know exactly what your asking advice about.

Stick with an Imbel. Dan Coonans are the cats A$$ in recievers, IMO.
Entreprise and CAI aren't too great, I think.
I had an IMBEL and was a sweetheart. Never had a problem.
Get on over at the Fal Files and they will show you the light.

Um ... I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that the Austrians did indeed build FAL's. The Austrian Army called it the StG-58, for SturmGewehr model 58 (adopted in 1958). They were built by Steyr. DSA still sells FAL's built from a new upper receiver combined with Austrian StG-58 parts kits, and the tooling DSA uses to make "new" FAL's (the SA58 model) was all bought from Steyr.

The West German G1 FALs were made by FN in Belgium. When West Germany approached FN about licensing production, the head of FN told them no. So, the G1 was replaced with the H&K G3, a derivative of the Spanish CETME.
Licensed FALs were indeed made in Austria by Steyr, which designated the rifle the STG-58. Steyr sold off their tooling and remaining spare parts to DSA here in the US sometime in the 90s. The STG-58s you can buy from DSA have mostly Steyr parts with enough US parts to meet the requirements of 18 USC 922(r).

To all of those who gave input Re: German FAL kit. "A a great big "THANK YOU". I'm reminded of the old addage that "to much information is dangerous!" in my case, i'm thinking that not enough info is INSANITY! well anyway, thanks again, olinbear
