I recently saw a P99 w/ 4 mags, 2 of which had S&W stamped on the mag body. My guess from that is that the mags do interchange.

Yes, they are interchangeable. Both are OEM'd from MecGar.

I did a search on TFL on this topic, and although results were mixed, most of the "NO" votes suggested that while SW99 mags DID function in the P99, for some reason, the P99 mags wouldn't work in the SW99. I don't know either way, but would at least suggest trying it with a P99 10-rounder before you lay down your $70 on a P99 pre-ban.

Don't forget the "9mm in a .40-mag" trick either... I can fit 15 rounds of 9mm in a P99 .40 mag. ;) But I do have 2 pre-ban 16 rounders for the P99 as wifey's "nightstand mags".

So you can get a 40 sw mag and stuff 9mm into it? Are they staggered there is no problems with feeding into the chamber?

Actualy Im really thinking they are totaly interchangable. As per the p99 faq http://www.praxagora.com/lunde/WaltherP99FAQ/III/3.html where it also states that smith makes the smith mags. my sw99 doesnt have mecgar staping on the mags, it has a smith logo. but they are both identical.

dont worry us sw99 owners are the redheaded stepchildern of the 99 series. but they so make more sw99's in more variations than the p99. and without the sw99 there would have never been a .40 p99 so most walther fans push the sw99 as it helps them get more walther products maybe.

i cant complain tho my sw99 in .40s&w has been great. Hasnt had a FTF FTE yet in around 400 rounds. Plus i got it for a steal. The p99 in 9x19 around here runs around 599 or there abouts. I got my sw99 in .40 and night sights for 569 so I cant complain at all. Well I do tho, as i do wish i got the p99 in 9x19. .40 ammo isnt cheap...and well there is just much more for the p99

Bowlcut, you wrote:my sw99 doesnt have mecgar staping on the mags, it has a smith logo. but they are both identical.Mec-Gar does not always put their name or logo on the magazines that they manufacture. If there is "MADE IN ITALY" stamped on the magazine body, it was made by Mec-Gar.
and without the sw99 there would have never been a .40 p99 so most walther fans push the sw99 as it helps them get more walther products maybe.Shouldn't that be the other way around? Without the P99, the SW99 wouldn't exist.

Anyway, enjoy your SW99.

yes i know mecgar made the mags, it says made in italy on them...i was pointing out that stampings doesnt always mean what they say, should have really made that clear.

but 569 for this area is pretty cheap, ive been in 5-6 different gun shops here and havent found anything cheaper for it. Internet buying hasnt opened itself up with me yet as I dont have any good contacts with FFL's to do the shipping yet. If I were at home I could do it alot easier, but here in Nashville I cant as I dont know anyone.

So, where did the P99's that Interarms imported from Walther in .40 S&W prior to S&W offering the SW99 come from?

If it were not for Walther supplying S&W with the frames and licensing them, there wouldn't be a SW99 pistol at all.

The new sub compact SW99 models that they are offering will eventually be offerd by Walther. I still don't see S&W offering the DA/SA, QA and P990 that Walther does.

BTW, the SW99 mags will work in the P99 and conversly.
