Depends. That's about huntin' range for a chinese M14 clone (Polytech, Nornico). They say the chinese ones have better (forged) receivers than later American made rifles.

For a springfield, $1000 is a good deal on an excellent condition used rifle...so $600-$800 must be getting pretty beat.

I think it has to turn into a Chinese Polytech to get to that price range:)

Seriously, in my area, you rarely see M1As under $1,000 if they are
Springfield and in nice shape. I suppose if a rough one turned up they
might be under but the stuff I see may be shot a lot but still looks good.
M1As are very popular here.

Rack Grade M1 Garand from CMP = $390 OTD

Rebarrel said Garand to clean .308 barrel = $250

TOTAL= $650 for mil-spec rifle

Sure it doesn't have detachable mags, but that's a heck of a deal. How badly do you need those extra dozen rounds?

I've been searching for a "good deal" on an M1A for over a year before I finally bought one. Even the Chinese Poly's and Norinco's are commanding $750+. Add to that the very real possibility of having to replace the bolt and headspace the gun and you're back to Springfield prices.
My advice FWIW is to snag the first good M1A that meets your criteria that is even close to $1000. I've seen the prices go up noticeably over the course of the year while I was looking. Good luck.

Last one I saw that cheap wasn't beat, but had a black polymer stock. It was a springfield and was 850 or so. Was a year or two back.

I don't think the M1A's get beat that much.

You should be able to find a used Polytech within your price range.

Parts alone can easily top 600 dollars,even for all SA parts.Even a Norinco/Polytech will cost more than 600 if you add in the cost of a U.S.G.I. bolt and fitting.The M14/M1a is an expensive rifle no matter how you look at it.But there's hope.I just picked up an early Springfield Armory for 850 with a bubba smith special bobbed barrel and stock and the crappiest glass bedding job ever. But all G.I. parts :) .
