I've had three Marlin 45-70's. Two were Guide Guns. One was the Marlin not-a-Guide-Gun. Here's the best load I found for the Guide Guns. It has MOA potential:
300 Grain Hornady HP (Remington 300 grain JHP work as well)
CCI Benchrest Primer
49.6 grains IMR 4198
I prefer Starline Brass, but Remington will do as well.
Crimp it only tight enough to prevent bullet setback.
My Marlins preferred the HP ammo. If you want to go with cast 405 grain RNFP bullets, here are three loads from my files for that bullet (I used Mid-Kansas 405 grain RNFP cast bullets but they went out of business):
38 grains Reloader 7 (accurate, reduced recoil load) or
36.5 grains IMR 4198 or
15.5 grains Unique (plinking round)

If you have a new gun I like h4198 using 46.2 gr and Hornady 350gr flate nose bullets Winchester large rifle primer usig RCBS DIES. Bullets are traving at 1800 fps engery 1 1/2 tons! this load will stop eny thing used mine in deer they drop like a rock. I don't like the lee dies they don't come with locking nuts and you will wont them. Good luck with your reloading.

This is from memory...double check powder
Speer 405's WW cases 55 grains Varget WW primers Hodgdens free book lists 50-60 grain range IIRC. I have a Decelerator recoil pad and this load is actually pretty pleasant so shoot in my 1895. I believe the velocity was somewhere in the 1,700 range
I use Varget in my .223 and get exceptional accuracy. I liked Varget for this application because it pretty much fills the case.
As noted above, there are a WIDE range of loads for the .45-70, with loads going from the 20'ish grains range to 60+ depending on powder speed
