If it was below $600, you should buy it.

Here is a good place to start if you want to know some basics.
Currentlyt he SVT's are getting more valuable particulary to WW2 reenactors.
They are good rifles though they where considered a bit fragile by the Russians and given there mass tactics they elected to stay with the 91/30 and other Mosin Nagant bolt action rifles. Though they did see some service post war, but largely they came at a time when Russia was unable to suport multiple weapons systems.
It is one of the few russian semi-auto battle rifles. The Simonov Rifle AVS36(not carbine SKS) was another (though most where select fire.) before the SVT but it was beaten in trials by the SVT. Feodore Tokarev had better connections than simonov did and the Tokarev was a better design. After the war though the Russians threw most of there effort into manufacturing the SKS and developing the AK. (Fun Fact The SKS was actually tested very late in the war on the bellarussian front.)
There are not that many semi-auto rifles in 7.62x54R in this country, the Romanian PSL and the Yugoslavian M76 being a few that come to mind and the M76 is extremely rare.
If you like history and interesting rifles its a good rifle for you. Magazines are not exactly easy to find for this firearm, though I have seen them before. The reason for this is the rifle was designed to use Mosin Magant stripper clips to load the magazine. I know they made some for repair and replacement purposes, but it wasn't envisioned as a weapon soldier would carry multiple mags for. If you like big powerful rifle, this is an excellent arm. This rifle is sort of the soviet equivalent of the M1 garand.
How much did they want for it??

It was damn purty though. I'm not in the market for one, I just wondered about it I'd never seen one in a shop before.

I had one in my hands about 6 years ago that was selling for $225. I did not buy it because I thought it would be hard finding magazines for it. DUH!:banghead:
