"Colt" "Carbine" "Pistol"
Dog trainer friend of mine said just make sure the first sound in the name is a "hard" consonant. (T,C,P,D,...)
Something about the way a dog's hearing works. They respond better.

jcs...Congratulations.

Right off the bat...You don't have a Lab. She has YOU.

Female Labs like pretty-girl names...human names...and they like being told that they're pretty...often. Do it not, and your girl will pout and chastise you by being hard-headed and obstinate.

Good names for female labs are:

Polly, Molly, Susie, Patsy, Dixie, Gracie, Bonnie, etc.

Avoid silly names. They have their dignity. Also, never EVER tell her that she's getting fat. She'll refuse to eat for days...and pout. Don't kid yourself into thinking that she doesn't understand exactly what you say. Dogs understand English perfectly, and it wouldn't surprise me if I were to catch
them speaking it fluently amongst themselves.

Choose a name that rolls off your tongue smoothly, because you'll be saying it a lot...often multiple times in rapid succession...for the first 6 months.
Reinforce the name during quiet times often so that she won't get confused
and think that her name is NODAMMITSTOP or some variation of that.

Keep her busy and don't let her get bored. Labs chew, and they've been known to reduce entire houses to splinters when they're bored.

She'll be a challenge and she'll make you wonder why in the name of hell that you wanted a Lab...and she'll steal your heart. Have fun!

PS Once I had a shepard named Ebony. The previous owners named him, we called him Ebby, pronounced sort of like Abby.

Jcs271--1911Tuner has hit it on the head! I envy you--you are embarking on the adventure that has been repeated millions of times since the first wolf made a deal with a Neanderthal, and every time it is the first time all over again. Best deal the human race has ever gotten.

Can't help you much on names--something will turn up that will be mutually acceptable. I know of a man who named each of his long succession of dogs, "Bud," so he wouldn't have to try to remember a new name.

Work hard to deserve the unconditional love you are getting. Remember the dog owner's prayer: "Lord, help me be just half the man my dog thinks I am."

If you pay close attention, the dog may choose a name for herself. .

Example: (Ones that I've used)

"Maggie" M for Mischief... AGG for aggrivation.

"Bob" Big Old Baby. Usually evolves into Bobby at some point.

I just got a new bird dog and we almost named her "Zoot"!

When she is bad we of course would say...."naughty, naughty Zoot!"

We couldn't find enough people that appreciated that humor so we named her Delila and call her "Lila".

I think female dogs need pretty names too. A simple two syllable name that doesn't even remotely sound like any command you'll ever give her is what I was shooting for.

GunnySkox
January 29, 2006, 09:33 AM
Make her initials EBP ("Evil Black (Lab) Puppy") and select names to fit. :D

I'm a catman (in the interest of full disclosure), and I've always found that anything more than two syllables will lead to me calling the cat "stinky" or "fatty" all the time, instead of using its actual name. I can't quite pull off standing at the door and calling like "Aaaaarmaliiiiiite!"

Nooooo!!!
They like tough names, just ask my last 3 female labs: Sam, Thor, and Chuck. Only Chuck turned out Bone-Headed

What ever you call her try to make it one sylible, they find one sylible commands easyer to understand.

I've always heard that you should name your dogs in names that end in the "E" sound--Charlie, Emmie, Lassie, etc. Two syllable names work best, as they are then able to differentiate their name from the one syllable commands like Sit-Stay-Down-No-Speak-Shake etc.

just pray you don't wind up like me, didn't realize that my wife and step-daughter were NOT making sure to adress the dog with the agreed upon name, i now have a 3 year old Min-pin that thinks her name is "Puppy".

which of course trumps what happened with my cat.... she's a Korat (http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/korat.html) one of if not the oldest known breeds (THE oldest one to be consistently "bred pure" by man) when we got her we had her registered with a nice fairly elegant sounding name (as is typical with such critters) and one portion of which worked well as a two-syllable call-name "Takhli" (a place name in Thailand some here with an Air force background may recognize it). we had her less than a week and she'd been forever branded "Smurf"

Right off the bat...You don't have a Lab. She has YOU.
+10 to that! The first year with a lab can be a bit trying, just hold on. Once they hit 1 year, they mellow out, even though they never lose that "puppyish" enthusiasm for just about everything. They are among the most intelligent and loving breeds out there, and they're great with kids and other animals.

Mine are mixed, but they've happily co-existed with a ferret and and a parrot at various times. In fact, my youngest used to pick the ferret up and carry her around the house.

As far as names, they should be two syllables, first one dominant and somewhat staccato. Has to do with the way they percieve sound. One thing to watch for with a lab is the development of hip dysplasia. Have her checked for it starting at one year. Even if she does get it, it's easily treated with Cosamine (same stuff I take for my bad knee, but cheaper) if caught early. Do not ever give your dog Rimadyl or listen to anyone who tells you to!

You're in for an adventure--all the best!

(We should really have a "pictures of your dogs" thread)

How about Elvira, mistress of the dark? Mine's named Athena, and I have to agree, a distinctive two syllable name works best in the field. It would be nice to match a name with her character, but that may not be evident for awhile yet.

If pup is into sniffing and thoughtful contemplation, you could call her Camus (pronounced Kamoo) after the philosopher. If she seems aggressive, she could be Alpha. If she tends to test your patience, you could name her Beta. Or if she reminds you of a girl you once knew, she could be a Kelly, McLean, or Hellcat. If she's an old fashioned kind of girl, she could be Emmy, Bella or Geena.

My favorite old lab was named Sarah, because if I named my daughter that way it would evoke thoughts of store-bought brownies.

His name is Dozer but my wife can't pronounce that so she calls him Jo-Jo, my son calls him Boo Boo and my ex who spends time with him calls him Clyde because she likes that name better.

He will answer to any of those names only if the right person uses it..

What they all say about labs- ITS TRUE

My black lab (has some newfoundland, supposedly, too) bailey is incredibly human like.

And he makes sounds like a wookie when he wants to play and no one will play with him :p But he has the sharpest dang bark when hes annoyed.

Does anyone else have, when you give your dog a treat, right before he goes to grab it, his eyes get real wide and you can see the whites in em?

When i noticed this i nearly fell over and the floor laughing. His eyes got so widwe for a split second!

As an owner of two labs, a black male and a yellow female I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I know the original poster wanted "gun-related" names, but the lab female knows!

Lily

Molly

you must use a two, three syllable word that has hard consanents in it, this will be more easily heard by your dog, in loud crowded areas. such as pee -pie, barkie,
crackers, smuckers, shakespeare, sodapop, baby, chicky, marbles, etc.

Yeah, she's a pretty good kid. She's 34, single and makes about $80K annually with her own real estate company. Only problem is she's a Clintonite Kalifornian and very definitely anti-gun. Of course, that didn't stop her from having a gun when she lived in a rough section of Atlanta during college. Typical anti- hypocracy, it's okay for me, but not for you. Yes, we've had some heated debates!

Our two labs are named Charlie and Molly. Fairly unimaginative. Problem with imaginative names is that they can be too cutsey. Avoid cutsey at all costs.

Despite the fact that your dog is a bitch do NOT name the dog Hillary. No dog, no bitch, no NOTHING deserves that. Plus, as Bill demonstrated so clearly, living with a Hillary is impossible.

Crate that puppy whatever you do!! And keep her crated for the first 18 months. We've done that with all our dogs and it makes civilizing them infinitely easier. They get out plenty with the kids and my wife and I during the day. Do not leave them unattended for at least the first nine months of their lives inside your house.

Our dogs loved their crates and whenever things get hectic they head for their crates or now for the utility room where there crates used to be.

Spend time working with your dog and training him. Dogs are happier when they are trained. Good luck. You've chosen the best pet and the best breed of that pet - the Labrador. To paraphrase Tom Cruise (who I detest now) from Risky Business - Labrador!! There is no substitute.

Enjoy.

I do not own a dog at this time. I have in the past had two different dogs; a shepard mix that was named PISTOL, and a chow mix that was named CHEWIE (short for Chewbacca - from star wars).

We had to get rid of Chewie because he started trying to bite the children, the wife , and me. I don't remember if Pistol died in his sleep, or was hit while crossing a road during a hunt (old dogs get to where they can't hear cars approaching, and will run across a road at night while hunting critters). Pistol was living in the country with my wifes folks when he died, because we were not allowed to have pets at the house we rented.

I will not own another dog while we live in town; if we ever return to a rural area, then I may get another dog. I can not keep an indoor dog, due to my asthma and allergies; I no longer think it is a good idea to keep a dog on a chain or in a small enclosed area. Dogs need to have the freedom to run and explore wide open spaces.

Gun related? How about BERTHA? (You have heard of Big Bertha, right?)

I remember reading a story about how a guy had problems training his dog, and he'd go on saying "Come! Come here, DAMMIT!" or "Fetch . . . fetch the ball, DAMMIT!"

One day, he hit his thumb with a hammer, and uttered the expected word . . . and there was the dog, wondering why his master had called him.

From then on, DAMMIT became the dog's "real" name.

(Supposedly, upon learing the dog's name, the family's minister enjoyed playing with and calling the dog . . . :neener: )

I believe I found the perfect name for the gun owners best friend.

This is "Gunner" actually his full name is "Gunner Down" just say it with a southern drawl in your voice. It kind of rolls out nicely I think.
In actuallity, we should have named him demon seed. The first year was a very trying time and I am surprised he made it alive. But my wife and daughter adore him.
He is, in my opinion, the perfect type of dog; $40.00 from the pound, able to go outside without fitting under the fence but too dumb to realize he can probably jump over it. Barks at everybody who approaches the house (including me) and eats regular old dog food. Other than normal care and upkeep, he is low maintainence. Now the house that he has tried to eat is another story. Gunner is a cross between a Rottweiler and Brittany Spaniel and is now 85 lbs.
