44 300 Xtp

been shooting this 5.5" Redhawk with a bunch of heavy bullet loads. The XTPs will expand on a drop of water. This one hit 18" of water in a couple of grocery store plastic jugs at 25 yards. I found the jacket stuck in the back of the last one The core was just beyond resting against a catalog. Black Hills 300 xtp load clocks 1124 fps but this is a handload of 19.5 296 cci 350mag. It does 1215 and is about .4 gr under hornady max. both XTP loads have shot groups like this from the RH. Neat that the 300 grainers end up with larger final expansion than 240s since there is more lead there to spread out.

Alright now you boys have me thinking about loading some 300 grain XTP's for my SRH. Does anybody have a good load using H110 powder and the 300 grain XTP's?

PALongbow...........
My load for the 300's in my SRH are............
300gr HP-XTP
Remington cases
CCI Large Pistol Magnum Primers
20gr of H-110
I've got some really, really great groups of a bench with my scoped SRH at 100 yards.

Might try Starline or W-W case, Fed 155, W296 / N110, too.
And finish with a 'heavy' crimp using Redding Profile Crimp die.
You CAN bend a 44 Redhawk :what:

I've been using RCBS dies with the roll crimp and watching closely for bullet pull of which there hasn't been any. Also have confined these loads to once fired Rem 9corbon) and virgin starline and WW.
I went plinking today with some 900 fps 240 grain swcs still nursing a sore hand. We were goofing around at about 40 feet shooting at 3/4 life size portraits of S. Hussein and O Ben Laden. This thing appears to be a better one handed shooter than I though It would be. The SA groups were about 2.5" and a da one-hand group covered Saddam The Great's face at about 3.5".
My hand is tired.

Steve,
I haven't dug into the reloading manual just yet, is your load near max? I think I'm going to give your brew a try and see what happens. I have been itching to try those 300 grain XTP's. I'll be in Bloomsburg next weekend so I'll have to stop by D&R Sports Center and pick some up.
BTW I shot my 240 XTP's today from my SRH off the bench at 25 yards and put hole in hole. At 50 yards I shot 2-3 inch groups. I'm tickled with my load for the 240 grain XTP's using H110.

the late '80s Hornady manual shows max at 19.8 296 and the one in the above picture is .3 under that. When the bullet came out and there was not any data, people were using a bit more. Performance was not much above this load though.

Yes, it is max. I have the Hornady 5th edition (they've come out with a 6th recently) and it lists 19.6 as max I believe. I worked up in .5 grain incriments from 18.0 and found 20.0 to be the best. I've been shooting that load 300gr/20.0 for lots of years through my SRH with no problems. No signs of high pressure (sticky cases/flattened primers, etc)
I use 24.5 for H-110 for the 240's.
I've been meaning to get down to D&R's but haven't had much luck (too busy) I want to get over to Curts Gun Shop (same area) he has lots of guns (used mainly) for sale.

Years ago when I got may Super Redhawk, I tried several 240 gr. bullets and got more of a pattern than a group. Pick up some 300 XTP bullets and put them over h110 and the SRH now does 6 shots at a strong 1.5 inches group at 50 yards. Sometimes I will get a group of 6 shot close to 2 inches, but as a rule it is around 1.5 inches.

I was at the local gun shop on Saturday and picked up a box of those 300 grain XTP's. I'm going to try your load Steve. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm also shooting a 7 1/2" scoped SRH.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND putting a perfect heavy crimp on your 'hotties' using the superior Redding Profile Crimp die; improves consistency and accuracy.
Tested, not talk.

The 300 grain XTP's are now loaded using Steve's receipe. Now if I could just get out to the range and shoot. Heck I saw snow flurries this evening.

Should have lots of fun with that load PALongbow. My SRH really liked the heavier bullet.
I'm itching to get out too. Right now I plan on getting out this Friday......have some loads for my M1 Garand I want to try out. Maybe take the Sig .45acp out and bust a few caps too.

Steve,
I must say your 300 grain XTP load out of my SRH is a winner! I took 10 rounds to the range today and shot five of those rounds at 25 yards off the bench. I litterally had all five bullet holes touching. My group looked like a three leaf clover.
The only real problem was that load really rocked my hands and arms. It's real potent but an accurate load. My 240 grain XTP load has this kind of accuracy as well but not as potent.
Another nice thing was the 300 grain XTP load had about the same point of impact on the target as my 240 grain load. Thanks for the load data.

Glad to hear that PALongbow!!!
Some years ago, before I loaded up some of the 300's....I had read an article somewhere, where it was said that the SRH liked heavier bullets. I'm pretty sure it wasn't meant to cover every SRH.....just the persons writting the story.......
But I kept it in mind.......loaded some 300's for black bear....and found that my SRH really liked them too. I usually don't shoot my SRH much during the spring/summer........I shoot others calibers, 9mm, 45acp......and .30/06 in M1 Garand.
Late summer/early fall I get the bug to shoot my SRH.
Yeah......shoot 50 rounds of the 300's and you'll know you shot something!!! :) I also found the 240 load and the 300 load have the same trajectory at 100 yards out of my SRH.
Glad it worked for you. Now your making me want to get the SRH out!! ;)

Steve,
I just might try the 300 grain bullets for bear and Deer. I won't be plinking with them because of the bullet cost and that load being so stout. I have read that some people on other boards couldn't get the 300 grain bullets to group out of other guns...other guns beings Smiths and such. Anyone using your load and shooting a SRH revolver the combination should be a winner.

Have not used the redding die, but I have had excellent results from the LEE Factory Crimp die. Crimping with a seperate die ouside of the seating die is always more effective.
When I bought my .454 Casull, I bought hornady dies and the LEE Factory Crimp Die.
The 300 grain XTP is an excellent deer bullet, if your gun will shoot it accurately.
Look how many muzzleloaders use the 300 grain xtp in sabots.

Guy at the range yesterday was sighting in a new Ruger .44 Mag bolt rifle. Had a typically heavy Ruger trigger, but was a pretty nice little rifle. He was shooting 300gr. XTP's and printing cloverleaves at 50 yds. or so.

Somewhere around here I've got a 300 XTP that I pulled off a 100-yard dirt (soft, loose dirt) berm from the old 5.5" Redhawk, that is expanded nearly down to the second cannelure, which is where I crimp them. If I can find it I'll post a pic of it.
I did lung-shoot a big doe with this load last year, and while the bullet showed signs of expansion the results were anything but spectacular. I actually hit her a bit further back than I anticipated, and I have no doubt that a shoulder shot would have put her in the weeds right there.
I start mine about 100 fps faster than yours, but I was indeed surprised to see this degree of expansion in dirt at 100 yards. FWIW I have shot some of my best 100 yard groups with this old gun using the 300 XTP bullet. Don't have any targets saved but you're gettin' me inspired to take the old boat-anchor out and shoot a couple again...
Good info, and thanks.
