Hey all. I'm kinda new to this whole gun thing. I've got an old one my dad handed down to me a few years back. I've seen some info on here already, but nothing recent on nothing on my particular shotgun. What I'm looking for is approx. value and who might make parts for it yet. It's a SS Kresge Model 151 single-shot break-open 12 guage. The main thing I'm looking for is a new stock. There's aplastic trim piece at the rear of the stock that has broken off. The wood is decent, although my dad is a carpenter and I think he refinished it. I shot clay with it and have gotten pretty good for the local crowd. I just rencently bought a Remington 870 Express and am eagerly awaiting my first rounds through it. My brother-in-law says I should do great being that this has a mod choke and the 151 has a full choke. the other question I have is what is the order of chokes. I know full choke is the tightest bunch, but what is the order of the rest, and which would be best suited for amature clay shooting at about 25-30 yards? Also, what is the accuracy distance with a slug in the 870? any help would be great, thanx.

Welcome to THR! I'll try to give some quick answers to your questions. For more details, use the "Search" function to look for threads with "101" in the title, by Dave McCracken, our moderator on this forum. These will answer a lot of your questions.

what is the order of chokes

The three most common chokes are Improved Cylinder (often abbreviated as IC), Modified (Mod), and Full. Cylinder bore refers to no choke at all. There are others - Improved Modified, Skeet, etc. - but for general use, the three I've named are the most likely ones you'll find on a general purpose shotgun.

Some shotgun barrels have a "fixed choke" (i.e. the barrel is manufactured with a certain degree of choke built-in, and this can't be changed). Others have screw-in chokes, whereby you can insert the choke of your choice, depending on the distance, type of target, etc. you want to engage.

which would be best suited for amature clay shooting at about 25-30 yards

To determine this, you'll have to "pattern" your shotgun (see the appropriate 101 thread for details) with various brands of shotshell, to see how each performs with different chokes. At 25-30 yards, you'll want at least a Modified choke, if not a Full: but each choke will perform differently with different brands of shotshell, so you'll still have to test various combinations to see what performs well in your gun with each choke.

what is the accuracy distance with a slug in the 870

Again, you'll have to try various brands of slug in your shotgun to see which shoots best for you. You should be able to get at least a 6" group at 100 yards with a good slug. You will, of course, need rifle sights or a telescopic sight on your shotgun to achieve such groups - with only a bead sight, you can't really expect great accuracy at further than 25-30 yards when using slugs.

Hope this helps.

A little trivia:

S S Kresge morphed into the large discount department store chain K-Mart.

A little nostalgia:

In the mid 1960s, the Kresge store in downtown Birmingham, AL sold, among other things, surplus military rifles on the lower level. You could find things like M1 carbines, Garands, Carcanos, Mausers, and even an odd Arisaka every now and then. Prices ranged about $50 or so IIRC.

The Kresge 151 is a Boito, CBC. It was made in South America. I looked this up last night and then fell asleep. IIRC the importer was FIE. John

Thanx for the many quick reply's. The 101 I have is a fixed choke, full choke. The 807 has the rem choke thing, so I know I can change them, I bought it used (from a reputable local outfitter) with a mod in it. I can't wait to shoot it!!! I've had a lot of people tell me I'll be really impressed with the comparison between that and the 101. I'm really excited because I'm very comfortable with the older gun. My brother-in-law wants me to shoot league with him this year, but I might wait a year, just to get familiar with the 807. Can anyone tell me if there is a common "problem" for lack of better wording to watch out for in the 807? Again, I'm kind of new to this, I don't even know how to fully dissassemble it yet, but I have an info pack coming to me from Remington. I'm in the La Crosse, WI area, does anyone know of a good club around this area? I know where there are many rod & gun clubs, but I'm not familiar with how they operate, so I don't know what to look for between one or the other as ana advantage or dissadvantage. Again, any help would be great, thanx.
