Speaking on the looting now going on in free Iraq:

"Freedom's untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things," Rumsfeld said. "They're also free to live their lives and do wonderful things."

Ain't it the truth.

Maybe its my wishful thinking, but didn't the questions cease being vapid, boring, stupid, inane, and outright insulting right after Arnett was canned?

I've always said it is quite therapeutic to step over a body on the way to the parking lot.

Yep, Rummy did have another field day. Ripped 'em up, made 'em look like what they are - highly biased journalist morons. Too many of 'em anyway.

I wanted to cheer for Rumsfeld today when I heard about his " sky is falling" comment. :D
First the naysayers said " OH, war is taking more than 2 days, not enough troops", now , it's " OH, looting and anarchy and lawlesness, oh my". You have a nation here who's people have been under an iron thumb for 25 years or so, no wonder they go a little nuts when let loose! Why are the combat troops expected to direct traffic and arrest looters? The media is not doing much better than the Arabs who claim they are glad Iraq is free but still blame us for the present "free-for-all".
I've heard and read that a lot of people in the Arab world are embarrassed by the behaviour of the looters in Iraq, but I'm not that surprised. Things will quiet down soon. The demand for "instant" results is just plain dumb.
My .02, IMHO etc.

Is it just me or am I the only one who can't get enough of his "one ought not this or one ought not that" lines that he throws into his comments.. He's definitely OLD SCHOOL ! :D

It is unbelieveably refreshing. The stark contrast between this administration and the spineless sniveling poll-watchers of the last administration could not be more welcome.

It's fantastic!

Gotta love the blunt common-sense of Rumsfeld, Bush, Cheney, and company. Such a refreshing and vibrant change from the previous weasels.

I'd love for them to keep schooling the liberal media pukes. It's great entertainment.

We're indeed fortunate Rummy answered the call once again. He sure didn't need the work, and of course no one could predicted the events he would preside over. Hooray for our President and his cabinet. Our nation would have already surrendered under a Gore administration.

I've forgotten where, but I saw one that I liked better. Asked by a reporter if he was doing the right thing by dropping cluster bombs near civilians in Afghanistan, he said, "We're dropping them on front line Taliban troops in an effort to kill them."

When I grow up, I wanna be Don Rumsfeld.

When asked by a reporter recently why we weren't following the 'war plan', Rummy
curtly stated, 'let me recalibrate a sec...you don't have the warplan, do you, a fact which gives me no small pleasure.'

BTW...major arab news outlets are now putting out the story that the looting is being staged by coaltion forces as a pretext to institute marshall law. These guys wouldn't recognize the truth if it crawled into their trousers and bit their privates.

"The coalition did not act in Iraq because we had discovered dramatic new evidence of Iraq's pursuit of weapons of mass murder. We acted because we saw the evidence in a dramatic new light, through the prism of our experience on 9/11." Rumsfeld before the Senate armed services committee.

Switch-o...... change-o!

He also admitted that the cost of occupation in Iraq will be about twice what he originally said ($3.9 billion per month vs. his estimate of $2 billion a month). But I don't have the exact quote on that one......... yet! :D

Don

PS - Did you ever read "Rumsfeld's Rules"? I'll have to find them to post here.

PPS - Iraq had "Comical Ali"........ but WE have "Revisionist Rummy"!

PPPS - "Rumsfeld's Rules are no longer available on line from the Department of Defense." Wonder why that is??!!

One significant reason for all the "untidiness" in Iraq is that Saddam emptied his prisons of all non-political prisoners. This was done last fall.

Some of the people attacking coalition forces are the criminal element. That has been established by the Defense Dept.

Some of the people attacking coalition forces are the criminal element.

I don't believe it ..... but it's still a pretty funny Rumsfeld quote!

What would the motivation be for common criminals to attack heavily armed US troops? Wouldn't it just be a lot easier (and less dangerous) to just rob the old unarmed woman on the corner???!!!! THINK ABOUT IT!

Regarding criminals attacking coalition forces, I am only repeating what the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs recently said, along with other reports from the Defense Department. I have no first hand knowledge, and I doubt anybody else on this Board does.

If you have a problem with what was reported, then take it up with General Myers.

Also, I don't make the assumption that all criminals are level headed and are only looking for an easy mark to rip-off. They may have another agenda not obvious to the sane person. Bandits are just another type of terrorist.

Another thing. Most of the attacks against coalition forces are not against heavily armed, hard targets like an armored column. The attacks are mostly against soft skinned convoy or patrol vehicles, or isolated soldiers, or easy sniper targets.

Yup, thats true. But I don't think the criminals Saddam left out of jail are behind those attacks.

It would make it easier to think that common criminals were behind the killing of our troops......... but this is not the case.

Don,

What you are engaged in is neither civilized nor debate. When confronted with facts that threaten your skewed perception of reality, you engage in an utterly childish nya, nya, nya type of monologue that is obviously calculated to engender an emotional response from those who choose to pay attention.
This is a classic example of trolling
behavior.

Rumors. Rumors. Rumors

"If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much." -"

"We cannot be lulled to sleep by this guy's lack of life."

Could you cite your sources for these quotes? I'd be intrested to see the rest of them, Don.

Since both of these quotes are obviously taken completely out of context, by virtue of the fact there's nothing to state what he was responding to, I'd like to see where these things came from and all the others in this thread as well.

For example:

The second one posted what if Rumsfeld was responding to:

Reporters: With the war winding down and a lack of response from Saddam do you think he is dead?

Rumsfeld: We do not know if Saddam is in fact dead. We are still looking into evidence and DNA to determine whether our strikes were effective in this capacity. If he is not dead we will find him. If he is dead we will find out. "We cannot be lulled to sleep by this guy's lack of life." We have a job to do and getting rid of Saddam and his influence is only one of many thing we've set out to accomplish in Iraq.

If this were the whole thing it would change the whole picture of the quote and I'm almost certain that if we see what he was responding to most of these quotes wouldn't be what they are being portrayed as. But then that would shoot a hole in the "Stupid quotes" issue wouldn't it?

Take care,

DRC

DRC, this quote is funny because it was in response to a question challenging the administration's (and Rumsfeld's) claims that Saddam had assumed room temperature. But obviously Saddam was alive and ticking ....... which resulted in some "untidy" questions from journalists who challenged Rumsfeld's claims.

The FULL QUOTE gives the reader a better understanding how Rumsfeld reacts when caught in a factual error. Thanks!
