My father and I each recently purchased a Nagant M91/30 rifle. Both rifles worked well with Polish surplus ammo. However, the trigger on mine was not very good, and the trigger on my dad's was terrible, even for an old military rifle. Does anyone know if the triggers can be improved?

Also, I think you can get some cocking pieces, and swap around parts and that may help.

Yes, it can be improved.

Before swapping cocking pieces I would look at the sear. Is it corroded? That could be the source of some of your trouble.

There are several things that influence the tigger pull on a Mosin action. Sear geometry, sear spring tension, firing pin spring tension, condition of sear and cocking piece. Sear is the chepest part to replace in all this.

I've had the same problem with a Mosin Nagant M38 and improved the trigger considerably using the insrtuctions at this web site http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2006/improvingm44carbines/index.asp

If you are at all handy with tools you can do it to, and much less expensive than buying the after market trigger. It's best if you have a Dremel tool or something like it to thin the trigger spring, and dial caliper to check the thickness, and some really fine grit (400, 600 grit) to polish the trigger surfaces.:)

I did all the stuff in the article that Roudy gave you the link for and it worked out great. The only thing I have not done is work on the sear because I don't have a working dial caliper. My trigger is considerably better now.

Will an aftermarket sear make any difference just from the improved manufacturing processes? Also, the trigger creep is about 14" on mine, isn't there a way to improve that also? I couldn't find anything, but it seems like I've seen something before.
