First question from a new guy

First of all, I'd like to say hello to all: this is a great forum you have here, and I'm honored to be a part of it.
I'm new to shooting, and am currently pricing autoloaders available in my town. Before joining here, I did some searching on SigArms products, and am noticing a disturbing trend: the Sigs in my local outdoorsman store seem to be around $100 more than prices quoted here (such as a P220 in .45 for around $775 at my store).
Now, I'm in no rush here, so I'd like to get a good price from a good dealer. I guess my question is this: around what price would you expect to pay from a dealer for, say, the mentioned p220? I'm actually looking at other Sigs, but just for comparison's sake...is this an overpriced dealer?
Any help you can give is much appreciated. Again, glad to be here!

Bassguy: First, check this forum: http://www.sigforum.com/ A lot of your questions regarding Sigs can be answered there. Also, there are a lot of sites that offer used Sigs at very good prices. The Sigforum can point you in that direction. As for prices where you live, a lot of times it is supply and demand. Sigs are a high end pistol and a new 220 is the 700s may not be that far out of line. I bought my 220 about 10 years ago NIB and it was $600.00. Good luck on your quest.

Thank you camper. I figured that might be a possibility, or the fact that this dealer is the one and only firearms dealer in my town, as far as handguns go. I'll check out the sigforum and go from there...
BTW: is http://www.hkweaponsystems.com/cgi-bin/forums/ultimatebb.cgi the equivalent forum for HK firearms? Again, thank you!

Pricing is dependent on where you live.
$700ish dollars for a 220 in NJ is pretty good.
I'd imagine in Texas . . . . not so good.
Try http://www.galleryofguns.com - I wouldn't pay more than the buy price there (you need to do a search and get offers from dealers to get that price. 1st number you see is essentailly list price.)

My 1st question is, where are you? Your state of residence plays a big factor in prices. Arizona is decently priced for weapons. Far better than say California.
Second, go to www.gunbroker.com and see what the average sale price is for the pistol you are interested in. You may have to sign up to get the completed listings but it only takes a minute. This will give you a general feel of what the going rate is on internet type sales.
Third, shop around on the web to get an idea what other gun shops are selling them for.
Finally, add maybe $40-50 to the price and that should put you in the ballpark for local sales. This again, all depends on where your at. If your in Cali or some other high price states the figures might be elevated.
If you want to buy off the web you will need to find an FFL dealer near you for transfer reasons. Expect to pay $15-60 for the transfer and another $25 or so for shipping. By the time you add all that up you might be just as well to buy local.
Also, get to know the guys in your local gunshop. Talk to them, establish a repor for future dealings. Buy some accessories for the guns you have to start the relationship. That way you can haggle a bit on the price of the gun you desire. The more they get to know you the better your chances to knock off a few dollars on the sale.
Enjoy.

If you're willing to buy used, there are some awfully good prices on police trade-in Sigs at www.cdnninvestments.com
They don't list their gun items on the Net, but follow the link to download their PDF catalog.
Actually, looking on page 29 of the current CDNN catalog, I see "Excellent Condition/Like New SIG P220" for $479, and "New w/ Slight Blemish" SIG P226 for $499, etc. Add on about $10-20 for shipping, and around $25 for your local FFL to do the paperwork. The fact that you won't have to pay sales tax should make it about even.
So, like-new or slightly-blemished SIGs for around what a new Glock costs you. Man, me and my wallet need to stay far, far away from the CDNN catalog.

P.S.: Oh, on pg36, various used SIGS for $350 and up. Cheers!

First off, congrats on your new hobby! And welcome to the Sig addiction. Say it with me, 'I'm powerless to resist'.. :p
For comparison sake:
Local (Lakeland, Florida) purchase of a P226 Rail 9mm, NIB $735 + tax (got him down from the $750 marked).
Online purchase of NIB P239 357 Sig (LEO box, 3 mags & SigLites) $595 + $20 s&h. Local guys wanted anywhere from $750 to $775 before tax for 2 mags and normal sights.
Personally I'd love to buy locally and support my dealers. I'm willing to pay something of a premium for that. But it's real hard if it's signifigantly higher, especially with a wife who's not into guns and in charge of the bills. :p The $100 saved going CDNN or OO could make or break the deal.
PS: She's in charge of the bills because a) I'm something of a spendthrift and not good with money, and b) I sure as heck don't want to do it. :p

Welcome Sir! You will love this site. In my area at least which is really pro-gun there are 20+ places to buy guns and one of these places is a very very well known gun sales/gunsmithing outfit. What I have found is at these local shops that have the best prices the prices are from $30 to $100 over the best internet prices. So if you buy on the internet your gonna pay $20+ for shippng and then an average of $25 for the dealers transfer fee. So you are usually gonna only save a few bucks if any by not buying locally. Buy you buying locally your chances are better to get a deal for repeat buisness on top of supporting local buisness. Theres always the situation where the internet/out of state will save you a couple hundred bucks and thats a no brainer. Then there is the situation where you want a uncommon item and the internet is your best bet. I buy on internet and locally but most of the time if it is only gonna save me $40-$50 Ill get it locally. To some that $50 might mean not being able to get the item and thats understandable. I also feel better when and if I have to return a gun for warranty to send it back from where I purchased it. Not that Ive had a problem but still.

Wow guys, thanks for all the feedback! Yeah, I guess state of residence would have helped...I'm in California, in the central valley. So, I'm not far from Sacramento and the surrounding communities. I figured I'd check out some of their stores to see their prices, but will definitely look into the websites mentioned.
First off, congrats on your new hobby! And welcome to the Sig addiction. Say it with me, 'I'm powerless to resist'.. :p
:D
I figured that was how it would be!

try and negotiate with the dealer. many times if you ask what you can buy it for if you pay cash you can save 10-15 percent. tell him your not trying to beat him up but that you saw it priced less somewhere else but would rather buy local. taking that type of attitude usually works good for me, but now that i am a gunsmith apprentice i pay whosale for all my guns......i can easily spend all the money i make doing that on firearms.:)

I know that feeling. I worked in a computer/software store once upon a time. Seemed I NEVER got out of there with an entire paycheck. :p
