What are your thoughts on it? I want one for practice & fun. Are they reliable?

i've found them to be quite accurate for the money, but i don't like the lack of iron sights on a .22. if you only plan on using it with a scope, then that's fine. never had a reliability issue. i got rid of mine because i don't like being forced to use a scope with a .22.
the marlin 795 has iron sights and also has a scope mount, so you have the option of either.

It seems like I'll be getting a Marlin 7000 then. I don't mind the scope. Makes me feel like 007.:neener:
How much does a Marlin 7000 usually cost?

I think Wal-Mart has them in the special order catalog for under $180. It looks like a good gun- post how you like it.
I am considering the Marlin 7000 against the Remington 597 (either the stainless or the LS HB- laminated wood stock, heavy barrel).

I'm not getting any gun from Mega-Lo-Mart. I would prefer to buy one from a fellow citizen. I'm 18 but I don't have a drivers license. I hate driving. I have a learners permit that says I'm 18 so it's not illegal if I buy one from a fellow average joe.
