Is there a better and/or cheaper alternative than this double mag pouch for $45 from 3-Gun Gear?

I have used three different AR15/M16 mag pouches. The standard GI pouch, one from The Wilderness, and the one you picture from 3-Gun Gear. This by no means makes me an expert. But, I can tell you from my experience that the 3-Gun Gear pouch is the best one that I have used. I am really happy with mine. I would definitely buy it again and until I find something better, that is the mag pouch I use.

Are you looking for a concealble double pouch(that type pouch looks to be a concealable type to me)or pouches to carry whatever number you choose to? There are many surplus and new made pouches in many different configurations. Try www.lightfighter.com

These things are like buying holsters for your pistols. You usually end up with boxes of things you tried and didnt quite like. Then again, it can turn you into a "geardo". It is after all a qualified addiction. :D

I've been using a Blade-Tech Kydex spare mag carrier. Not cheaper, but very effective and it conceals well under a suit coat.

For cheaper, it's hard to beat military mag carriers.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is, what do you intend to do with the mag pouches on. The military pouches completely enclose the magazine. They protect the magazine somewhat from dirt and rough treatment that comes with the territory of an infantry soldier. The drawback is that they arn't the fastest thing out there and the magazines are on edge so they stick out further from your body. They are also designed to be worn on a military pistol belt with your web gear suspenders hooked to the top of them. The 3-Gun mag pouch is, just as the name implies, designed for shooting 3-gun matches. It holds the magazines sucurely, however I don't know if it would be the right choice for low crawling under razor wire in mud. You can run, jump or whatever with the 3-Gun pouches on and they won't come out but they certainly arn't as secure as a military pouch that has a cover over the whole mag, snapped shut. For my needs; shooting on a range, maybe taking a walk while carrying a rifle for plinking or jackrabbits, and the various civilian shooting sports it is great. It is very fast since about half the mag is exposed. It also goes on and off your belt very easily; in fact you don't even have to unfasten your belt to put them on. The 3-Gun pouch also wouldn't be my choice if I saw some need to carry a whole lot of magazines. I don't do anything that requires more than maybe three mags at a time. If I needed to carry a dozen magazines or so, I would be looking at a tac vest or maybe the military pouches.

My purpose would be for 3-gun games and taking rifle classes. The exposed mag pouch above seems like the right choice.

it really depends on that you're going to do.

I refuse to use exposed top magazine pouches unless i have a reason to, like if i'm going to CCW my mini-14. (which i never do) for rifle magazines because i don't want them to fall out and/or get lost.

for what you're gooing to use them for, I think that a kydex magazine carrier would be the best bet. i'd check blade tech and some of the more well known kydex holster makers for them.

Check out www.cqbsolutions.com.

I got a drop leg two mag pouch. Very tactical. Excellent quality. They have all kinds of tactical goodies, and they are excellent quality.

This one's very popular with 3-gunners at my range.

It's not exactly a "leg drop", so it's much more flop-resistant...

Here's the new "enhanced" version that holds 4 instead of 3...

$27.96 and $39.96 respectively from Sableco (http://www.sableco.net/id24.htm)
