This is probably a silly question

I am looking into getting into the world of reloading. I have begun collecting components and equipment. Recently a I purchased a Lee die set for reloading 7.5X54 MAS. The accomapnying sheet indicates that the bullet is 7.82mm in diameter and .308 inches in diameter. I am confused. Wouldn't 7.5mm be .295 inches and 7.82 mm be .307 inches. Please help.

Cartridge names can be misleading. Use a good reloading manual. The 7.5x54 MAS cartridge uses standard .308 bullets -- the same size as 7.62x51 and .30-06.

7.62 X 63mm = .30-06

Yes, any bullet with the diameter of .308" is 7.82mm, regadless of what the caliber name is.
Multiply .308 x 25.4 to convert to mm on your computer's calculator to see why.
The 7.62mm designation comes from the net diameter of .300" that the slightly larger bullet is "squeezed" through within the barrel, if I understand matters correctly. (Somebody help me out here, cause I'm getting out of my depth.
:D )
P.S. I think it's Austria where ammo/gunmakers are required to specify the actual diameter of the bullet as the actual caliber, so that a .30-06 is sold as a 7.82 X 63.
