I found a like new, no box Winchester 88 .308, 1958 birthday at a private sale table at the gun show. Gave $600 OTD. I was 3 years old when it was born. I don't know a lot about them. I had been looking for a rifle cartridge lever gun for pig hunting and was thinking about a Browning BDL until I spotted this. Looking at some of the asking prices ( $1000 to $1600 :what:) on GA, I am thinking I had better find something else for swamps, tree climbimg, beating off hogs etc. Any one know if these have a durable action. I am sure parts must be a challenge.

The 88 was Winchester's last modern lever gun and was never designed to be a super strong action BR gun, but as a hunting rifle. In the role of a hunting rifle it should work fine for many years. I found a great vintage article on the 88. http://www.gunsandammomag.com/classics/ct0504/

is a hell of a deal. Is that a 1958 stock?
Gunsamerica is generally a joke. The 308s aren't too bad for price. 358 Win and 284 Win are another story (never actually seen either of those).

I can't swear to the stock vintage. As stated, I don't know much about them. It does match the dated descriptions in the articles I have seen. And it does match the overall condition of the rest of the finish and internal action wear. My wife was born in '58 so she likes it already. I think I will shoot it some and do some less challenging deer hunting with it. But do my best to keep it in the like new condition.
