Ok, some of you may remember the holster thread, this subject comes from that arena. If I am out, and go to a place I cannot carry, when I stick my gun in the car safe, does it matter if I leave it loaded? What about when stored in a gun safe at home?

I personally am of the mind that when storing in the car, leave it loaded, but in the gun safe unloaded.

Any ideas or thoughts are apprediated, thanks.

I have a dozen or so "go to" and car guns that I keep loaded 24/7 for months at a time.

The other guns are usually unloaded and in the safes.

Car:
Leave it loaded and if possible holstered. You don't want to be seen fiddling with the gun trying to get loaded/unloaded while out in public.

Home:
Depends on how long you are going to leave it in the safe. My daily carry gun stays cocked and locked as much as possible. This cuts down on the amount of manipulation I have to do with the gun and ammo. Rechambering rounds can cause bullet setback, which raises chamber pressure. Handling rounds exposes them oil and dirt which could lead to a failure.

Self defense guns are cleaned after every range session, reloaded and put away in a holster that covers the trigger gaurd. Range guns get wiped down, put back in the safe unloaded and cleaned only when necessary (had problems that outing). I'm lazy and like shooting a lot more than cleaning :)

Of course all guns are always assumed loaded until I've personally verified they are clear.

All my center fire guns are always loaded. I like to keep things as simple as possible.

My CCWs (pistols/revolvers) stay cleaned & loaded as well as all revolvers in
general. The pistols I do not carry or shoot at least every quarter are just
cleaned and locked away unloaded.

Am I the only one here who likes to load a whole stack of magazines (like
Last Man Standing) the night before going to the range and get a big smile
on their face while doing so? :uhoh:

Are you kidding me? I thought everyone loaded mags the night before a match! I load enough rounds to usually get me all the way thru my match or pratice session the night before.
Back on topic, any gun of mine that's out of the safe is always loaded.

I mean actually enjoys loading their magazines not just when. :D
It's the one thing about shooting that makes me feel like a kid again.

Ok, understood now! I like being prepared, thus I have all my mags loaded and packed away in my shooting bag the night before a match or pratice.
I do that because I like to concentrate on other things while at the range, other than loading magazines. Sheer joy from loading magazines, naw, guess I've loaded too many.

Nothing in my house is loaded except my .38 in my night stand. I keep all my guns locked up and unloaded except that gun and whatever I'm carrying that day if it's not the .38. I unload my carry weapon before putting it back up. I don't like having loaded firearms around a house that often has a grand kid walking around in it. I don't need, but my carry gun to defend myself. I can only shoot one at a time. I ain't Rambo.:rolleyes:

I do have a loaded shotgun stashed out in my shop. I keep it there so when I'm working out there, I have something handy. I work a lot without my carry gun on.

When I shoot a match, I load mags at the range. I don't have 286 magazines for my gun. I only have five for my 9 and three for my .45. I do usually pack my guns and ammo and leather before a shoot. Range trips are usually off the cuff, not planned that far in advance, and I just gather up the stuff before the trip. Ain't like a big deal, three miles to the range.

Probably one of my faults, I never do today what I can put off til tomorrow.:D

I used to keep all of the revolvers loaded except the 22lr, but I got tired of unloading them for dry-fire practice. Now I have one revolver, one pistol, and one shotgun that I leave loaded, as well as some loaded mags and stripper clips for my rifles wouldn't fit in the safe if left in the rifles.
