Doc SWAT called me tonight (he's waiting on a baby). He borrowed his father-in-law's HK91 to shoot. Being a swell egg, he broke it down to clean but is having getting the bolt reassembled.

I tried to describe pressing on the locking lever on the bolthead thingie over the phone, but not so sure I did any good. Anyone have any better descriptions that I could relate or a website he could look at?

I thank you for your time.

Replace the firing pin and spring, and place the locking device over them. Twist 180 degrees.

Then while holding the whole unit upside down, place the bolt head onto the locking device, right roller facing up.

Depress the spring loaded arm and push the bolt head in.
If he pushes it all the way in, pull it out 1/4" and then twist 90 degrees clockwise.
(He might also give the bolt head a good smack with his palm instead of depressing the spring loaded arm. :D It hurts, but it works. :p)

Be sure to snicker and say, "Welcome to the club"! :p

The hardest part is realizing that the bolt head should NOT go flush against the carrier.

Here's the best I've found. It's a reprint from a Norwegian manual. Lots of good diagrams.

Great diagram Destructo6.
I didn't see this diagram when I was in the army. Must be a fairly new thing...
Add taking the sling on and off, and taking the trigger mecanism in and out of the gripframe, and at my peak, I did the dismanteling in 20 seconds, and putting the rifle back together, loaded in 40 seconds.

Guess there are some one quicker out there...

20sec including the trigger group? Uuh, that's fast! :what:

How long do you need for an MG3?

When I was a DI, platoon record was 1:10 for field-stripping, presentation of the firing pin, and reassembly including function-test dry-fire. This is from a "standing start", sling properly attached.

For those of you in an experimental mood, see if you can beat my fastest recruits without cutting corners:

German Army drill for G3 field-stripping and reassembly

--Cycle the bolt to verify unloaded status.

--Unhook carry sling from forward sling loop.

--Push retaining pins out of the rear receiver cover and insert them into the holes in the stock for retention. For those of you with the "airborne" telescoping stock, re-insert the pins into their original holes after removing the receiver cover.

--Remove retention pin for trigger group, remove trigger group, re-insert retention pin into trigger group pin hole.

--Remove bolt carrier assembly by pulling back charging handle and holding hand over rear receiver opening to catch bolt carrier as it slides out.

--Remove retention pin for handguard, remove handguard, and re-insert retention pin into hand guard pin hole.

--Do *NOT* unscrew flash hider.

--Take bolt carrier assembly into left hand, bolt head facing upwards. Place right hand over bolt head. Twist bolt head 90 degrees towards you, and pull bolt head off bolt carrier. Remove bolt key, firing pin and firing pin spring.

--Hold firing pin up and yell, "Schlagbolzen frei!" (Firing pin free!)

--Re-insert firing pin, firing pin spring, and bolt key. Twist bolt key until bolt key lug shows in the little window on the underside of the bolt carrier.

--Push bolt head onto bolt key, extractor pointing up, and push bolt head flush against bolt carrier.

--Pull bolt head away from bolt carrier about 5mm (2/10ths of an inch, rollers need to be completely retracted into bolt head), and rotate clockwise until flat bolt head surface lines up with bolt carrier.

--Replace handguard.

--Drop bolt back into receiver and let it slide forward until it smacks into battery.

--Replace trigger group.

--Replace rear receiver cover.

--Hook sling back into forward sling loop.

--Cycle the action, move safety to "F", dry-fire for function test, and move safety back to "S".

Yell "G3 zusammengesetzt!" (G3 reassembled!)
