Looking for advice on where to locate and what size to make Comp ports on a SW 645 45 acp and a SW 686 .357 mag. Have seen many designs but no real dimensions. From what I see they are usually around 1/8 inch and start around 1/4 length of the barrel back from the muzzle. Looking to put a row of 3 or 4 ports on each side of the 686 and most likely a single row down the top of the 645. Neither a carry guns, both also have red dot sights, so the only real purpose of the porting would be to tame the recoil.

Send them to magnaport unless you are a darn good machinest and a gunsmith. To do it without an EDM machine you need to take the barrel off.

Porting the 645 may lead to more trouble than it is worth. Just cutting ports through the slide and barrel frequently leads to a build up of residue and, it you shoot lead bullets, a build up of lead inside the slide. This fouling was overcome by Schueman with a barrel with a block of metal left on the top of the barrel through which the ports are drilled. The slide is machined so the block fits through the slide. Revolvers can be ported and I recommend letting Magna Port or a similar company perform this process.
