Being that it's payday today I headed up to the local Walmart to pay off my Win 1300 12ga I had on layaway. Filled out the form, showed the DL a couple of times. And the Complaining about the new Form 4473 began.

But it was the manager that complained, thought it was a a waste of taxpayers money and that they should have stayed with the old forms, or even simplified it.

Part of the paper reduction act. Use two pages instead of one.

I haven't had to fill out the new form yet, how is it different? It's not yellow anymore, right? How different are the questions?

They use the same idiotic questions. As if a piece of paper ever stoped a crime.:banghead:

Actually, the brady check does keep a small number of scumbags from getting guns at the store. Granted, it doesnt make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things, but its quick and relatively painless (I just bought a Mosin Nagant yesterday, and between filling out the form and watching for it to clear took all of 5 mins at the most).

I have zero clue why they went to the white form instead of the yellow one, seems like some a-hole at f-troop had to justify his useless existance, but its no skin off my back.

I thought there might be a picture of this new 4473, I wanted to see one.
Then again it has been some time since I've seen, much less filled out a 4473 period. :p

What Guns? Gun Store? Oh yeah, that is place with the gumball machine - right?

;)

For the most part, some of the information you previously were able to write down all in a single field are borken up in to seperate boxes now. A couple or few more yes/no questions, bigger font size (IIRC), you sign on the top of the second page to accomodate the changes. Other minor stuff but can't remember all there was.

As far as the yes/no questions... I don't know if there are any more added but they're still answered yes, no, no, no, no... all the way until the end. :)

There is a block to fill out your county of residence, where before, it was just added between the city and state. The rest pretty much looked the same to me.

The link to the 4473 form on the ATF site is the previous revision, not the current. (The reason why I didn't post it.:))

Filled one out about a month ago. As I recall not really any different other than layout. One thing I did like is that some of the response fields are smaller now. With the old form I was always instructed to spell EVERYTHING out i.e. United States of America. Now in many cases the space provided requires abbreviation.

Don't know why they changed it, but it's no more or less bother now than it was before IMO.

I haven't seen the new one yet, but isn't that the old one? Wasn't BATF absorbed into the DOJ?

If you guys want one they can always be ordered free of charge here:
http://www.atf.gov/dcof/index.htm
or you should be able to walk into any gun store and ask for a blank one. If I get some free time this week I'll scan one in and post it if people are interested.

The questions on the new 4473 are the same, but (in my opinion) a little better laid out. The old form had one large box for "Name (Last, First, Middle). A lot of people wrote their first name first and then had to scratch it out. The new form has 3 separate boxes, each labeled with which part of your name they want in which box.

The old form had a large box for "Residence Address (Number, street, city, county, state zip code)". The new form separates these out as well, which is nice because tons of people forgot their county on the first form.

Another nice thing is that there is now a checkbox for USA so you don't have to write it out anymore. If you are a resident of another country, you check "other" and then fill in the blank.

Since they spaced everything out for clarity, the form got longer. My only gripe with the length is that there is a half page of wasted space at the bottom, and it would have been nice if they had used this in the section where we list the guns, so that you could fit more than 3 guns on a 4473 (you can attach a piece of paper, nust like with the old forms, but since they had the space it seems like they could have used it.)

The other problem with the form is that question 12 refers to question "11.l" and they used a font that looks like 11.1 instead of 11.L. I have a bunch of people look up and say "I can't find 11.1."

I've already contacted the ATF in hopes that the next version will have more lines for guns and clearer font on question 12.

I just filled one out earlier today and like Waterhouse said same questions different format

Instead of one block to write your address it gives you a separate box for Street Address, City, County, and State

Your name is also given in three separate boxes

Place of birth is separated with two boxes one for state or a different box for foreign country

And I think you checked a box if you were a US citizen if not you had to fill out another box with the name of your country

But they could have waited until the other forms were used up to make the change

Everything else is exactly the same.
The form is easier to fill out and for the shop employees to check for correctness

The other problem with the form is that question 12 refers to question "11.l" and they used a font that looks like 11.1 instead of 11.L. I have a bunch of people look up and say "I can't find 11.1."Glad I'm not the only one

I'd rather criminals contribute to the economy by purchasing firearms than acquire them by stealing mine.

I have heard of people having problems with their addresses not matching between the forms and IDs. My DL and CCW both have the same address, but my current address that I would be writing on a 4470 is a different address. Would this be a problem to purchase a gun on the new form?
I haven't lived at the previous address since 2002 and have bought 3 guns since then. Do I need to bother updating my DL and CCW (which I need to renew in May anyway) with the new form?
Thanks, modified.

I like the new 4473. I've filled out about 6 or 7 over the past two weeks and appreciate the extra room and the simplified format. This comes in especially handy if you're filling one out at Turners where they'll tear up the darn form and make you start over again if every "i" is not dotted and every "t" not crossed.

Do I need to bother updating my DL and CCW (which I need to renew in May anyway) with the new form?I think technically the addresses have to match.
One place I go didn't care but one refused me but put it on layaway with the stipulation that I fix the problem before they released the gun.
That was under the old form

If you are going to use that form of identification, yes. Otherwise, it is against the law. It is the reason I got a new DL last August when it is up for renewal this May. (OH, at least in my area, won't extend the expiration date if renewed before the deadline. Move from SE OH to NE OH.) The addresses have to match.

IIRC, you can bring in proof of your current address (different from your DL or CCW) and get a pass.
