7.62x39 urge: Saiga vs. Yugo SKS?

I`ve got the itch for another (sold my other ones) 7.62x39 plinker. The Yugos are really tempting for the price. I had a Russian SKS I sold a few years ago :banghead: ,that I liked well enough. Then I was looking at a Saiga,I like the feel and the fact that it`s new. I like the removable mags (even though they`re only 10rds.). Hate the AK safety but for a fun gun I don`t suppose that matters much. But as a downside the Saiga doesn`t have an integral bayonet or grenade launcher, which are useless but kinda cool. So waddaya think, which way to go? Marcus

I faced the same dilemna a few years ago. Choice between an SKS and a FEG SA2000M (Hungarian AK with Choate furniture and single stack 10 rd. mag). I went with the FEG, and havent regretted it.

Get the Yugo--I took my second Yugo out yesterday for the first time.
150 rounds and no problems what-so-ever----it was even factory sighted in. I was easily hitting bottles and cans at 50yds off-hand--- without doing a thing to the rifle--just load and shoot-----yes, I picked up my mess.
The Saiga has a really cheap plastic stock and the propietary(sp?) single stack mags are pricey----if you really want an AK---get a SAR-1 for a few more bucks and use the regular--and cheap--30 round magazines.
The Yugo's are really well made--I mean REALLY well made----surprising for such a cheap price-----a stamped AK doesn't even really compare to the milled Yugo. Plus the GL and bayonet are pretty cool features too.
Now the .308 Saiga looks interesting---esp since it's a quarter of the price of most other semi-auto .308's----but that's another discussion.

Try REAL hard to get both.Id recommend a 16" Saiga and an "unissued" Yugo.Dont forget a spare mag for the Saiga.;)
And by the way,Saiga 7.62x39 mags arent single stack and standard AK mags can be made to work very easily although its not entirely legal without some US made parts.

For the Saiga, if you rip off the bottom cover plate (its rivited in place, but a dremel will eat right through them), the reciever is cut for a standard AK trigger pack. Throw a US made trigger set in ($40 from Tapco), a US made pistol grip ($10ish, same place) and a US made buttstock (K-varcorp.com would be your best bet) and you are good to go. You'll need the pistol grip nut and screw, but those are $2 for the pair, or so. Once you add those 5 US parts, you can use 30 round mags in the rifle (but it will require a feed ramp be installed, which can be made from a short length of PVC pipe and the dremel, epoxy or screw into place, takes ~10 minutes).
If you need more info on the conversion, check the Build It Yourself forum on www.ak-47.net (you need to have a user account and be logged in to see the forum, otherwise its hidden).
Having not shot my two Yugos, and only having handled the Saiga, I'm not sure which I would recommend. Either one, I dont think you can go wrong.

The Saiga in .308 is indeed interesting. I would really like to get the carbine.

Saiga seems to be the better choice to me. I want to get one myself and convert it to take hi-caps, be a fun project gun...

I LOVE my Saiga in .308, and for a general plinker, I would pick the Saiga over the Yugo.
One problem, Try finding a new 7.62X39 Saiga right now, there just are none out there :(

Saiga in .308 would be pretty nice. But if you are going to get 7.62X39, i would advise to get the SKS. Mainly because stripper clips are so quick to load, and there are no springs to wear down when you store the ammo ready to go.

JH225: The Saiga 7.62 was available for $150 when I last spoke to CDNN. Was tempting for sure...

CDNN's been out of them for at least a month, Aim has none, can't find one anywhere except the auction sites at about $200. I'm not paying an extra $50 on a gun that only costs $150 to begin with.
I'll wait, and then get a few:)
