A buddy of mine is graduating from the CLEET academy this week, and I'm thinking of getting him an ASP or some similar collapsible whompin' stick for a graduation present. Unfortunately, I have zero experience with such weapons. Anybody know who makes something good?

Check for a local police supply in OKC and you'll probably find them.

Otherwise just order it off the net. http://store.botachtactical.com/aspf16a.html

I actually ordered an ASP from botach years ago. Actually, I eventually ordered two from them, I believe.

Be advised that botach *may* get you your order, on time, and with 0 problems, or might take your money, never contact you, and send you your product 2 months later...or finally tell you they won't be able to get it.

If this is time-essential, I advise using someone else.

Several cops, 2 uniform stores and one idiot DA told me they were illegal in michigan.

After finding out recently that michigan actually hasn't banned them because they have yet to classify them as blugouns like they did decades ago with less effective brass knuckles and blackjacks, I ordered an ASP from www.jlusa.com It came in 6 days. With knives I have had very good experience with www.onestopknifeshop.com, and they also sell batons, but its taken as much as 10 days for them to get an order to my house. Bottom line is I'd go with jlusa for batons, they don't screw around.

Oh, and don't go to a uniform store. Most of them will ask "are you cerified to carry an ASP?" After you say no, or yes and then fail to present proof, the odds are they will refuse to sell it to you. They don't like selling them to civilians for liability purposes. Which is understandable, but the bottom line is just don't hit anybody or anything in the head with it because that will likely kill him/her/it.

One more thing. It sounded from your post like you were confused about who made the best quality expanding batons. Just stick with actual ASP brand and you'll be all set.

Monadnock Autolocks are the Rolls Royce of expanding batons, but they're much more expensive. Around $90 instead of $50. Though I think one place had older style Autolocks for $60.

Anybody know what size is popular? I want to get him something that will carry well on his duty belt. He's a stout fella, 'bout 5'10". I found a bunch of different sizes, and I'm not sure what they're all for.

Thanks, guys.

Most cops have 26" batons, but some have 21" batons, and both work just fine. I have been rather happy with my 31". For duty use, I'd say its a toss up between 21 and 26, but if you want to get him the by far most common kind, the 26" seems to be the standard in the law enforcement buisness.

Yes, Monadnock is the NICER baton. Very cool stuff.

I'm issued a 21" ASP for duty use.

Does anybody have any experience with the ASP shoulder rig? I am considering ordering one.
