All things being equal, I'd go with the Finn. Nice rifles and great shooters. I guess though it would depend on what you wanted it for. Hunting, brush gun, trunk gun, target shooting, etc... Heck, just buy 'em all!:D

Although the Lee-Enfield is my favorite bolt action, I voted for the Yugo M-48 Mauser of the rifles listed in this poll. I would have voted for the No.4 Lee-Enfield had it been an option.

I voted for the M-48 because of the full-size rifles listed, it has the smoothest action and the rear sight's lowest setting is 200M, IIRC. Mosins can be very accurate and the sights go down to 100M, but the actions are tough to work from the shoulder.

The Jungle Carbine kicks like hell, which is why I didn't vote for it.

The VZ-24's rear sight's minimum setting is 300M. Mine shot ~18" high at 50 yards with the issue front sight. I put a higher blade (from Brownell's) on it but haven't sighted it in yet.

If you can find one of the Yugo-reworked Kar-98ks, they would make another good, cheap truck gun, and the rear sight goes down to 100M. I picked one up last year for $90.

However, were I to pick a milsurp rifle for truck gun use, it would be a No.4 Lee-Enfield, for these reasons:

1. The sights are much better than the Mosins and Mausers.
2. The action is much smoother.
3. The box magazine holds 10 rounds vs. 5 for the Mosins and Mausers.
4. The mag can be kept loaded but separate from the rifle if need be.

First, get Yugo M48 (cheap, ammo is cheap, works well)
Then get M39 (ammo is cheap, best of the Mosins)
#4 Enfield would have been higher on my list than any of the above.

I think I'd want as short as possible to make sure it could be retrieved as quickly as possible.

Probably go for the M38 or the M44 and ditch the bayonet.

Actually, the No 4 Mk 1 doesn't seem all that much longer than the M38/M44. I'd probably use that for the better/quicker sights. And certainly couldn't knock anyone's idea of the M48.

I'm partial to the Finn M-39, but I'm biased because I've got two beauties. They are easy shooting, well built and accurate rifles. Also, like Oleg said, they shoot cheap and abundant ammo if you can get over the fear of corrosive ammo.

If you want a Mosin carbine and don't want the bayo of the M44, I'd recommend a close look at the 91/59 before laying down hard earned cash on a M-38. In my experience (two 91/59s and one M38), they aren't as rich in history, but much less worn and nicer shooters.

I'd also have to agree with the other folks on the virtues of the Enfield No. 4 Mk1. However, ammo may be slightly harder to find than either 8mm or 7.62x54R

More fun than you should be allowed to have for under 100 bucks, and a nifty attached wienner roaster. Taking mine out tomorrow so I can mop up yous guys in this months postal match.

Went with the Jungle Carbine. For a mil. surp. truck gun the shorter barrel would make it handy, plus it holds 10 rounds.

I left one out -- What about the Mosin Nagant 91/59 7.62x54R
for $110 at AIM? It's a cut-down of the 91/30.

I voted for the M-48 because that is my next mil surplus rifle.

I'm voting the M44. Talk about a fun shooting gun! The caliber is defintely large enough to take anything in North America and if you don't hit it you will definitely scare the heck out of it!:D

I'm tempted to drive to the range tonight and fire a few shots just to see the fireball! :D

M-44, but I'm a sucker for bayonets.
